After 3 hours sleep, the trek to Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National park began.

It was icy cold and the night was deep. After 5 a.m. dawn slowly began, unveiling a breathtaking landscape. This one was captured at 5h30 am, 15 minutes before sunrise and is part of a larger series of photos.

To have a better sense of scale, mind that from one side of the picture to the other are about 4Km and that white mist on the bottom are clouds compressed against the crater.

The smoke above Semeru, 3600m, the volcano on the background, are two eruptions of ashes!

The white/grey chimney is Bromo (middle of the photo, to the left side), alo active and expels sulfur fumes. This place is almost unreal, especially with this morning light, 15-20 minutes before sunrise. You must see it to believe it!

Apart from basic and unavoidable editing in Photoshop (slight contrast, saturation and unsharp mask), the shot is unmanipulated as much of the work is done on location using a ND grad filter to balance the light and a polariser to enhance colour and contrast.

PS: I appologise for the 500px larger side and watermark in the frame, but some unauthorized use has happened before in other websites (including mine)

Surreal, intensely beautiful...like an album cover. Really superb control over all "plastic" elements of the image - a kind of model for PS work and exposure in my book.
Well done, Joel,
Francis

The mist really does confuse the perspective and scale, truly great phote.

Plus your right to brand it.

This is a very nice photo, I like the dust clouds over the vulcano. It really shows seismic activity. Nice work. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Joel,

Very nice shot. Sharpness is amazing. It's a fabulous landscape, very exotic. Your composition is also excellent, I particularly like the virgin sky with the dramatic fumes escaping from the volcano. Interesting note too.
Well done!
Quentin.

Hi Joel
One of the most beautiful sights I have seen lately. Great colours and depth and DOF. Only A bit small on TE....

Fabulous image. First class composition with great colours. The effect of the slow shutter speed has worked perfectly for me.
Good notes. Whilst I sympathise with your reasons for posting a limited size image, it is frustrating not being able to full appreciate it.

OMG breathtaking views GREAT PHOTO ... OMG speechless.. A+

Wow very impressive shot. The cloud makes the photo very extraordinary. Very nice colors. Well done.

Como já nos tens habituado....
Fantastica! Parece uma pintura e não uma foto! E uma pintura trabalhada... Muito bem.
