Photographer’s Note
Plaza Vasco de Quiroga in Patzcuaro, Michoacan.
Straight from a flyer I got there:
Patzcuaro is a magic town. The city was developed as a religious center and the early purepechas believed Patzcuaro to be the doorway to heaven where the gods ascended and descended. It remained a religious place for the Spaniards when Don Vasco de Quiroga transferred the Bishopric of Michoacan to Patzcuaro in 1540. Patzcuaro is considered the most representative city of the mestizo culture, cradle of the union between Purepecha and Spanish culture. Patzcuaro is truly a colonial gem, its architecture of baroque, neoclassic and eclectic styles invite the visitor to return time and time again.
