In Hindu religion and mythology, the snake is one of the most significant and frequently recurring symbols. Strangely, it is the symbol of both birth and death, reconciling these contradictions within itself. Snake worship precedes idol worship, and while practices have evolved to focus more on deities conceived as superhumans, snake worship is still prevalent in all parts of India.

In ancient India, there was a clan called Nagas whose culture was highly developed. The Indus Valley civilisation of 3000 B.C. gives evidence of the popularity of snake-worship amongst he Nagas. This was in pre-Aryan times. The Naga culture was later drawn into Hinduism. In Jainism and Buddhism too, the snake is considered sacred. It is believed that a cobra saved the life of Buddha and another protected the Jain Muni Parshwanath.

Here you see the tall snake statues kept here near a temple by the deities on rememberance of the good things that the snake god has done to them. There so many versions of stories to this. This a very common scene in rural India, especially in Tamil nadu.

Hi Siva, i like this one very much. first of all, the beautiful natural surroundings must be appreciated. Next, I like the note which is interesting and important in the sense that it tells a lot to our non-Indian friends.
good work indeed.
Thanks, Arnab

Siva,
A very deep note for a very likeable image...
I particularly like your well thought out note complimenting the POV you have chosen, kind of taking an appraising look on the custom!...
Well done!.
P.S.: I added to my theme which is for the very same purpose. Tell me what you think.
Cheers,
Prem.

siva,
nicely framed and great dof. good color and i like the contrast in this shot. great note.

Hi Sivakumar,
I do like the composition the way the statues fan out from the center but maybe it would have been better to take face on.Then we would have a better view of the interesting chair.Like the colours.
Regards, David

Hi Shiva,
This is one of the best ones in your gallery.Great POV, a 'straight in the face' angle would not have been so attractive.Good lighting, clarity and contrast.
Very informative note.Congrats - Vikram

Hi Sivakumar,

Both picture and place are amazing. Ii lke the angle, the tree branch embracing the tombstones and the green color of the leaves.

Good shot - Keep well - Izzet

hello shiva,
i like this picture for what it makes you wonder and admire, "the nature worshipping." the mystic feel from the picture is got from the clustered look of the sculpture and the height at which the picture is taken...good one...i like the note also

Hi Sivakumar,
I am fascinated by the carvings of the snake statues and I guess it's on granite stones. The framing is great and I like the position you took. The colours are well saturated with good clarity and the repetition suggest interesting rhythm. Well done!! Have a pleasant weekend.

- Beautiful typical representation of the habits of this beautiful country, the POV is very good as well as the light and the color, well done!
