Photographer’s Note

We just came across this moose, eating aside a dirt road. SHE seemed unimpressed by my presence; although I didn't test things by getting out of the truck. My husband swears it's male because it's so big but I don't see any horn bumps. I have another photo of a more distant moose with horn bumps. The males shed their antlers in the winter and this early in the season, they're just starting regrow. Isn't it amazing that every year they are able to grow such a huge rack?

More than any other place I visited in Alaska, moose seemed very much a part of life in Soldotna. The local grocery store had a picture of three moose trying to come into the store during a storm the previous winter. There were signs posted along the roads, asking motorists to be careful and listing the number of moose killed by cars thar season. The totals varied widely; so I'm unsure if the some were more up-to-date than others or if they were totals for that specific section of roadway. If they were section specific, I'm surprised there is a moose left alive in Alaska. Of course when crossing the Nullabor, I counted 548 dead kangaroo; to be fair, most had been there a long time. I also read that more people were killed by moose every year in alaska, than by bear. I'm guessing that would be auto accidents.
