Bucharest, a city of contrasts.

I have recently posted a few photographs from the Piatza Unirii (Union Square), also known as the Civic Center, and wrote about its radical communist style remodeling without the proper illustration. Well, here it is.

This is the "classic" view of the "Civic Center", a ruthless project of communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu, put in action during the 1980s. The large Unirii Boulevard, lined with symmetric and massive apartment blocks, leads to the impressive "People's House" (nowadays the Palace of Parliament) in the background. The structure, which is surrounded by similar but smaller structures, is reputed to be the largest in Europe and third largest in the World. Due to its immense size, the structure and surrounding complex cut the city in two - an urban planning nightmare. It was erected on one of Bucharest's few hills, known as Uranus hill (aka. Spirii, Arsenal). It houses the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate (2004) of Romania, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Southeast European Cooperative Initiative organization and others.

I like the perspective and the depth of your picture. Also beautiful autumn colors. Regards, Yvonne

foarte reusita ceasta imagine a "renumitului" bulevard incununat cu nu mai putin renumita Casa a Poporului. cerul e frumos plus culorile aurii-ruginii a copacilor. eu am fost pe aici pe 19 octombrie 2005 si timpul era urat si soarele apunea si lumina exact in obiectiv, respectiv n-am reusit sa fac poze ca asta!
