It was hot, it was sad, it was heartwarming. All of these explains my short encounter with this little girl this morning.
Hot coz it was midday. When she saw me approaching, she ran towards me asking for 1 dollar. I gave her more.
Sad because she was just a little girl. I saw her dirty clothes, dirty face, uncombed hair. She was toiling in the ricefield.
Heartwarming because despite all these, she was still all smiles. I was complaining about the heat, the dust, the smell. I should learn from her.
She's a flower in the ricefield...

Really a great portrait!! A fantastic smile, glistening eyes, wind blown hair and a good green Bokeh to emphasize it all...
PeterDF (421) 2006-02-12 17:33
A remarkable shot of this little girl! She is certainly a little ruffled looking, but her cute little smile overwhelms the circumstances you photographed her in. It reminds me of a photo you might see in National Geographic. Really thought-provoking and moving.
SamB (1948) 2006-02-12 17:34
Hot, sad, and heartwarming indeed--you've captured all three in this shot. Your work is incredible, so I don't feel bad looking for little things in it--it would have been nice if you could have included just a little bit more to the left to keep the end of her hair in the frame--just the tips missing leads my eye out of the frame without any resolution. There also seems to be some blown out highlights in the left arm. OK, I couldn't find anything else that wasn't great. I like the composition, and the spacing between the top of her head and the horizon works well. The DOF works well as well.

Outstanding colors, smile, atmoshpere.
Yes, we can and should learn from these children. They posses more strength and determination than many adults in more civilized/comfortable countries.

What a stunning little model you've found here. As ever the tones are truly spectaclar and there's plenty of detail and sharpness.
Shots like this make me think about when she grows up -- will she still be so beautiful? Will she still be so unapprehensive when approached by a photographer?
Thanks for sharing, Lewis.

Her sparkling eyes say: Everything in the world is just about fantastic.
They taught us a good portrait rules: Make sure You have the contact with the model.
Here, is the perfect sample of such rule of a thumb.

wonderfull picture Manny, i love the big smile on her face, i love the DOF you have made, great iluminacion, great colors, very good POV.
luisafonso (862) 2006-03-27 5:38
This is a photo with a strong character. Technically, it's very good. The blurred green background against the pale red dress. The sharpness of her hair, the colors on her skin. Strong composition leading the viewer directly to her eyes. Fabulous expression. I would have cropped the grey top... but that's a personal option. Congratulations on a striking portrait.
lasscor (7640) 2006-04-09 15:22
Great portrait composition.
Very beautiful little young girl.
In spite of its difficult work, she breathes the joy in life. We should stop feeling sorry for futilities.
Thanks for your sharing,

I'm not surprised why you're the favorite of over 800 members of TE. I browsed through your photos and they are great! The photos plus the way you compose your notes are amazing!
This particular photo really struck me because of the smile of the little girl. How do you get them to pose for you?
I am particularly new in photography and I would appreciate some tips from you.
