Ms. Domanska lived there almost all her life.
Ms. Domanska was poor.
Ms.Domanska shared her poverty with the pigeons
everyday on her way to the church.
Nobody noticed the disappearance of Ms.Domanska but the pigeons.
They were sitting there silently waiting for her to come - once more.

Lodz.
Another inner courtyard in the city I left behind.

bardzo dobre zdjecie, swietnie uchwycony klimat Lodzi, opowiada historię. Niesamowity jest ten gleboki kadr, szeroki kat. Swiatlo.. wszystko ekstra po prostu.

Hello George. I really like your compo and mainly the overall atmosphere of your photograph. Filled with symbols, history, and slices of life, out of time. Emprisoned in our courtyards although we all have wings...

Uzyska³e¶ bardzo wyrazisty efekt przez stonowane kolory z mocniejszymi akcentami na postaci ludzi. Ruch rêki staruszki w statycznym kadrze i prespektywa przyci±gaj± wzrok. Nagie podwórko-studnia i odrapany mur, niestety typowe dla £odzi, nagle nabieraj± uroku. Zdjêcie ¿yje. Moje uznanie

lovely shot, I like how everyting drive us to the background. Almost a b/w photo with subtile colors tones giving a special mood to the scenery.
Thanks, Alain -

Ciao George. La tua descrizione della foto é molto forte e triste. La foto arriva al profondo del cuore. Bravo.

Superb daily life shot, using the wide angle very skillfully. Everything jsut right here, even to the nice touch of catching some movement in her arm.

Serwus George !
Jakiekolwiek słowa mogą okazać się tu zbyt ubogie. Napiszę tyle: wyjątkowa wrażliwość i kapitalne kadrowanie. Nieosiągalna dla mnie, najwyższa reporterska klasa.
P.S. Notka znakomita. Jak z "Ballady o ciotce Matyldzie", choć tam - zamiast gołębi - drugoplanową rolę grał kot. Ale nie o notkę przecież tu idzie.
Serdecznie pozdrawiam,
Mat

Striking - the mood and your note, both. Top notch work. Pozdrawiam :)

The capture of the emotion in the photo and how you have brought it out is beautiful.
Well done

A very moody composition, George, well exposed and framed, and I like the way in which you have captured the movement in the woman's arm. I am not very keen on the frame though. It took me a while to work out what those strange lines at the top of the buildings in the top right were (at least I assume they is part of your frame's 'special effects'). To me effects like that detract from the composition - but of course that's just my personal taste, others may like it. Cheers . . . David

I guess that the situation hasn't changed much for some people, and nowadays, there must be a Ms. Polanka. Difference? Pigeons have now something to share, the bird flue...
Ah... good old days.
I know I said I wouldn't give you a point for the next message. This happy green man is therfore for Ms. Polanka.

This is what wide angle are for... To give us, simple mortal, vertigo... Yes. That photo gives me vertigo. For different reasons. For the space that have that strange propriety to be so narrow (almost claustrophobic feeling) and in the same time with the end so far away. I came close to say "without an end", but that is not true. And this is another reason for my vertigo. The way it looks, there seems to have no way out. Vetigo because I know that Ms Domanska disappeared, but where... Vertigo because you achieve to make her not totally disappeared after all. Vertigo because people who are poor are quite often the most generous one. Vertigo because I can't imagine what it is too leave the country we loved...
A perfect gray...
Claire

Hi George...Are you still upset with me?!?

I disagree sith Sonti..I think a few sprinkled children are always a welcome addition. I like the perspective here, although it seems like you have pulled/stretched it somehow? my inexperience comes beaming through on this as I cannot fathom what you have done to draw my eyes towards the end...

Gorgeous. I haven't noticed this one yet, George. There is a feeling in this that is so East European. So filled with history, pain, loneliness. The pov is superb. The moving hand of Ms. Domanska is waving bye to an era that is replaced by the new one, more technological and superficial. I wish Ms. Domanska lived. I wish many Ms. Domanskas continue to live, continue to feed the hungry pigeons of old courtyards.
Amazing shot.

Czesc,
Mieszkalem w Lodzi przeez kilka lat, w czasie moich studiow.

I never understood Poles' love affair with pigeons... I hope I never will. Well, you composed it well, with everything leading the eye to the kids, even the formation of the rat-birds points down to the them... even the framing of them inside the woman's posture... and of course the lines... oh, what lines.... Great textures too... thanks for this shot.

Hello Georgei

Here is a picture full of deep feelings, and an atmosphere of loneliness difficult to describe. Could be used as the poster of a greta movie. This is not a picture where someone could evaluate the frame, the exposure and other technical aspects, it is a picture deep with emotion.

By the way you may be happy to find out that I play the piano and a very large repertoire of classical music in my head. Whole symphonies by heart, and also countless chamber orchestra pieces. I start with Bach, and end up with Stravinsky . Sometimes I participate to competitions at the radio.

subtle note, with a strong literary touch.
excellent image matching the grays of the decayed courtyard and the colours and movements of the people.
the boys in the background make the image complete.

I know this photograph since always… I saw it as soon as I arrived in your gallery… in September 2006… and I have always seen it when I thus pass at your galerie…, almost the every day for a few months. Each time, by looking at it, I smile… I smile of the bottom of my heart and I do not say anything.

Yes, I do not say anything.

And I realized that this photograph was for me like an obviousness: it represents and transmits one perfect moment.

Yes, a perfect moment.

It is thus perhaps normal, perfectly normal, not to comment on it. Nothing to say.
Because all is already known as in the photograph.
All the beauty of the life of this woman is in this image.

Grazyna.

PS : sorry for my mistakes...my english ;)

George

what a strong picture you have here! The composition is great and you did really set the mood perfectly: you can feel the solitude and sadness by looking at this photo.
Very powerful note, too.

Congratulations

Valentina

This photo strikes me, being so true.
I like the feeling of confinement given by the concrete surounding, the angle of view and the fact that we don't see the sky. This adds to the anguish resented as witness of this old lady who is out simply feeding the birds but keeps her silent dignity intact.
I like that she's dressed in red, the color of life, opposed to the gray environment as if she's fighting against the lack of hope.
But what I like most is that the picture is like an alegory of life, from an reversed POV. The childrens in the background and in the light, like a beginning, then the birds, vivid and occupied and on the verge of flying away, like every second of the passing life and then the sad and resignated present.
But the photo isn't sad, it is just true, a testimony, a confession. And it makes us want to know the story, so it is open and an opening in itself. So much with 4 concrete walls and an old lady? Well, I think this means talent.
Thank you,
Ioana

Not ignored but savoured with grace like the fine wine it is - that she is - poignant poetry - the sad/happy memories of what has passed - she reminds me so much of an old next door neighbour who would watch us into our house at close range - at first concerning us - then comforting - then more and more contact until one day she simply wasn't there any more.......a beautiful image George........simply beautiful in the fullness of that word.

Hey George!
Seen this one just now, and what I can say...a sad photo of a sad story...as always, you managed to bring the inner life of a human being so close to us, the viewers...this is an impressive take, with the good close to the subject wide angle POV. Even though they say "One photo worth a thousand word", I would add that a short paragraph can enhance a good photo to a level of uniqueness...Your words made this photo stronger than it was from the start!
Well done, my friend - I admire you're technique and POV!

Hi George, another piece of art....
the atmosphere of this image is incredible...a jump in the past...the old woman with her friends, the boys in background..the gray tones..a sense of sadness and loneliness...

Hello George,
Sad, very sad... It's so depressive to know that someone can die and the only ones that miss her or him are th pigeons.
Is this the world we want? is this why we live in this world to forget our more important treasures, the elder family, just as if they so old that they don't have any use?
This is why you're special, you never forget them.
My deep respect for this photo and sad but very true story.

a great photo in my humble opinion!

This is an amazing photograph George! The cold, muted tones are exquisit...adding I quess to the sadness of the story being told. The spectating kid in yellow (perfectly angled) further draws her lonelieness as theyseem to be keeping their distance waiting for her to finish so that they may pass.
