Photographer’s Note
Hey everyone. I posted this picture, not only because I thought it was neat, I posted it because I would like to find out how to take better star pictures. I used my Canon Digital Rebel XT with a 18/55 lense. I should probably buy a bigger lense to take photos like this, but is there anyway I can take a better photos like this with the lense I currently own? On another note, I am going to take more pictures like this when I go to Italy. I heard that the stars and the moon look closer there. I'm not sure if it's just a fact or rumor though, but I guess I'll find out.
Thanks!
- Jeff

Hi Jeff
I am in the learning stages of using my camera at night so my suggestions could be worth a grain of salt.
One I would try is later to lessen the horizon light and longer bexposure to capture the star light.
Canon may have hints on their web site.
You would also need to experiment with apertures etc.
There is a certain quality to your photo though with the red glow in the horizon.
Regards
Peter

Don't know why a bigger lense, if you want to shoot in the dark long shuttertimes and wide opened lenses (f=small) are more usefull, don't forget a tripod.

I also posted a workshop for you. Thanks for sharing!

Jeff, This didnot serve the purpose at all. I figured out the purpose of the picture only by your comments. Like 'Bos' mentioned in order to use the natural light you need to expose the picture longer and bringin in as much light as possible. You do have contributors to the theme. Read those pictures and you will know. I guess a dark ground will help pickup more light from the sky. Have fun. I wonder how Stars and moon comes closer in Italy?

Poor photo but the workshops did a good job of improving it. I dont know how to take better star pictures, I would probably increase exposure time.
