Photographer’s Note
Traveling ownward from Shindur pass to Phandar (gilgit region) I met this little Ismaili girl with her baby sister. The baby's face was painted in black. Only Kafir Kalash (non-muslim tribes of Chitral) do face painting but here I was amazed to know this is a practice in muslim region. I was not able to get any information from the shy little girl because she did not spoke any Urdu.

a very interesting photo and note. I think the flash took the color out of the girls, though. maybe without flash would have been better.

this is a wonderful subject, but i think you need to work it more with your camera. get in closer, use a zoom if they're shy about the camera, and focus on the girls' faces, cropping out most of the background which i think is unnecessary.
i agree that the flash seems to have washed out some of your colour. the scene might be bright enough if you change your exposure and aperture.
great subject though, i'd like to see more of it.

Hi Kamran,
Nice photo of this wonderful scene. Your comment is also good. I hope you don't mind I made a quick workshop especially to fix the color problem.
Cheers,

hi Kamran,
it is the first time I see paint on face..I did not seeit on a grown- up face either (I mean, in this side of Asia :)..It is very interesting..probably a baby would not hold still for patterns and they applied it in splashes :)..
It would be very good without a flash..I think it is a good documentary photo...
