Photographer’s Note
Oh my god! They killed the dog!
Just kidding... the dog was just sleeping there, in the morning sun.
In the picture, we see 2 Chilean policemen (commonly called pacos in Chile) standing in front of the statue of Dr. Salvador Isabelino Allende Gossens. Allende was elected president of Chile in 1970 and he governed for 3 years until he was killed in a military coup led by General of the Army Augusto Pinochet.
The History of Chile has been sometimes happy, sometimes sad. Chileans lived in a dictatorship, they have a strong military tradition, but they are warm and kind to foreigners and they are curious about other cultures.
The country is entering a new era at the moment because Chileans elected the first women president. Socialist Michelle Bachelet was elected president on January 15th, this cements a shift to the left in South America.
Congratulations to her and Viva Chile!
