Photographer’s Note
This is a detail of the mural "Conductores de Venezuela" of Pedro León Zapata in the Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas. You can see it when you drive on the Francisco Fajardo highway. According to an article in El Universal: "This mosaic refers metaphorically and literally to the communication, the traffic of people who see themselves reflected therein as a mirror of the reality" (http://www.eluniversal.com/2005/05/15/ccs_art_15401A.shtml). Besides the caricatures, I love the bright, eye-caching and varied colors. The sad thing is that some vandals have tried to destroy it several times by painting disgusting graffitis over it; but, each time, it has been cleaned and recovered.
Some additional details:
Zapata is one of the most famous Venezuelan caricaturists, if not "the" most famous. According to: http://dearaya.com/gisela.html, "this painter, illustrator, and humorist has the longest trajectory in editorial cartooning in the country".
The Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas, built by architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, was declared World Heritage Center by the Unesco. In this reference: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/986/ there is a short description: "The university campus integrates the large number of buildings and functions into a clearly articulated ensemble, including masterpieces of modern architecture and visual arts..."
I will later post details on some other sections and a picture showing the mural as completely as possible (I might not yet have this picture).
I enhanced the saturation a little bit
