Photographer’s Note
Gargantuan concrete Tetrapod's protect the shoreline along Moa Point and the Lyall Bay Breakwater against the rough seas of Cook Strait.
Each Tetrapod weighs approx. 3.8 tons.
The first of the “engineered” precast concrete armour units, also known as "dolos" were developed by the French company Neyrpric in 1953. Armouring of the extension to Wellington Airport runway (at Moa Pont) n 1955 was one of the earliest projects to use Tetrapods.
These ones were manufactured and placed more recently.
