Photographer’s Note

Here is a photo of Haarlem, which I took when I was standing on a brigde over a river called Spaarne.

The tower you see is the Bakernesser tower, which was founded in 1250. To the right of the church, you see a grey building with a dark roof, that is the Weigh House (Waag), which was erected by Lieven de Key in 1597-98. It was in use until 1915 for the weighing of goods brought in on the river Spaarne.

To the very right is the Theylers museum (with the green statue on the roof), the oldest public museum in the Netherlands. The people you see are all waiting to see a Michelangelo exhibition.

The round roof between the Weigh House and the Theylers museum is the roof of a prison (I thought).

It was snowing today in Haarlem, but sometimes the sun came and most snow is already melted. I took this photo when the sun just came from behind a cloud.

This is the pp-work I did with the photo:
-rotating and cropping
-more contrasts +27%
-more blue +23%
-resizing
-sharpening + 37%
-more light + 2%
-kill the noice of the sky with the dust function on 1 pixel

Hi Stef,
You've got a great result of PP-work here. Lovely colours and great sharpness. I like the deep dar colour of the river reflecting a little the buildings and the sky. I wish you had a little more sky here, the buildings reach very high in your composition... anyway, nice work:)

Hoi Stef,
Ik vind het zeer correct dat u de melding maakt van uw PP, maar de foto komt er alleen beter uit, misschien had u de origineel in een tweede foto kunnen meegeven, om eens te zien wat het verschil was. Maar hoe dan ook Stef, het is een hele goede, iets wat mij aanspreekt door de diverse gevels te mogen aanschouwen. Prachtig werk.

A nice atmosphere in this photo, Stef - good exposure to render the details and mood provided by the lighting, and a nice add with the diagonal of the Spaarne, and the reflections on its rippled surface. Very relaxing and pleasant to look at, thanks. Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2006.

Hey Stef. All in all very good PP work. I might have added more light than the 2% but that's the only thing I'd do different. You did well in getting those buildings all nice and vertical from the original. Nice work Stef!

There are very good reflections in the good curve you have in your composition.
YThe composition is well done for framing a complete subject of facades and closed situation.

Dag, Stef. Mooi licht en mooi contrast in je foto. De gebouwen komen zeer goed uit op de donkergrijze hemel. Ik hou ook van de reflecties in de gracht. Haarlem lijkt wel een mooie stad te zijn, die heb ik maar een keer bezocht en het regende toen pijpestelen. We waren blij het Frans Halsmuseum te kunnen bezoeken.
Ik gebruik de gelegenheid om je een voorspoedig nieuwjaar te wensen.

Spectacular shot! The light in this is really amazing, with the sun really shining off all those windows and giving them special emphasis. The dark sky and dark water makes the buildings stand out even more, and gives this a dramatic look. Wonderful reflection too, with the complex patterns in the water. Well done!

Wat een rij voor die tentoonstelling zeg... Prachtige foto van het Spaarne en dit mooie stukje Haarlem. Het warme licht is erg mooi, vooral in combinatie met de donkere lucht. En de weerspiegeling is natuurlijk ook fantastisch. Goed werk! :-D
En natuurlijk een goed 2006 toegewenst!

Really nice composition, very dynamic with the centred curve which leads the eyes towards the background. Beautiful light and colors even if the sky appears slightly dark (due to filtering or to real clouds ?). Beautiful reflections on water. Thanks for sharing !

Beaufiful reflections! But the most special from your picture is the light, warm, making the nice colours even more attractive. The POV is also great, from the water. Nice architecture and graphism on its details!
A little bit of blurr on the top of the trees due to the work on the sky, but anyway its a very nice work!
