Photographer’s Note
Fishermen from Inle lakes seems to be a favourite spot for the photographer.
here is their fishing method.
Inle lake is 22km long from North to South and 11 km long from East to West at the widest part. The lake is about 1000 m above the sea level. On the north of the lake, there is a wide area without any houses of the village. There the water is crystal clear. You can see lake-weeds growing under the water. There are 32 kind of fish living and the most famous fish are "Phain" fish (a kind of carp) and snake headed fish. Inthar people (son of the lake) catch fish in various ways. Here you can see there is a fishing trap, made of bamboo frame and a net. It is a conical shape. On top part the net is tided with a string, which is connected to a bamboo stick. This stick is pulling the net and serve as a lock on top of the bamboo frame.
While the fisherman is rowing his boat, sitting at an end of the boat, he is looking into the crystal water, looking for air bubbles coming up from the weeds. If he see, there might be a fish and he put down his net like in the picture. He unlock the net and it drops down. Then he put his long spear into the trap and frighten the fish to run away. The fin of the fish goes into the net and so it is trapped. This way of fishing is very uneconomical. I prayed that he got a fish. The fisherman might earn more money by showing the method of fishing to the tourist.

Interesting and very well composed, the man in the left side faces the white clouds and mountain in the other side very well. Colors are so bright, and perfect sharpnes, a good work

good notes on this unusual and indeed uneconomical way of "fishing". i haven't seen a catch or a fish in their boats, or even a photo of one, have you? it just further proves my theory i explained to luko. it's al just a brilliant marketing trick to draw tourists and photogs to inle lake. think about it; legrowing, conical traps, balaning on the edge of a longboat... plleeease! it's a whole package! i mean come on, can't you see there's something fishy here? :-)
nice compo to capture him behind the net like this. is it just me or is this one much larger than usual? are there different size traps for the different depth of the lake?

Good luck or entrapped? he looks like he's caught himself inside his net, is it a metaphor about depending on tourism rather than fishing? ;D
good point made by Mark, the fishing net looks big, bigger than the usual ones, I wonder how this size looks when put down on the boat....
