Photographer’s Note
PRISONER OF WAR CAMP
1942-1945
The park and the flat area you see below is the site of the former
Kinkaseki Prisoner of War Camp.
The camp was originally built to house workers who were brought over
from mainland China to work in the nearby gold and copper mine.
In November 1942, the camp was converted to a POW camp when more
than 500 men, captured at the surrender of Singapore, were moved here
to work as slaves in the mine.
A memorial has been erected to honour the many Common wealth and
Allied POW's who were interned here. It is located at the entrance to the
park. More information is available by the moment.
