In order to improve my technics, I wanted to share something quite new today. I’m not as lucky as Callie de Wet :) who has wonderful National Parcs around him, so I headed for the closest pond.
As Mathiasmo said it for Airin’s shot, it is a Mandarin duck I caught in the nearby pond of the Bercy park this afternoon.
I made a first attempt to get some pictures with my 420 mm teleconverter two or three weeks ago but the day was not that sunny and I decided to choose a 1/30s exposure so as to have enough light. When I came back home I discovered that all my pictures (about 30) were blurry... I was really disappointed.
So today, I was back for revenge with a less idiot setup (and some more sun...) which enabled me to come back home with few interesting shots.
I made some research and discovered that the beautiful male (I guess it's his wife by his side) loose his bright colors at the end of spring when the reproduction period is over. Originally coming from China, it was a sacred bird which embodied the faith in wedding. This lovely duck is said to be quite adaptable as he’s quite skilled at swimming, flying but also walking compared to other duck’s species.
No cropping, just an automatic level applied.

Wow, quelles couleurs flamboyantes ! Bravo !

The colours in the duck are good and I like the colour and ripples in the water. Position of the main duck in frame is also quite nice. The bird in the background does tend to make it difficult to make out where one ends and the other begins. The picture will sharpen by using the Unsharp Mask and this does make a considerable difference.

A fantastic image you made Steven. The lines in the feathers so sharp and the colours so fine - Wonder how you the water to be that appropriate background colour. Well-done - great technique.

It's a wonderful sharp image, a little bit too tightly framed maybe? Would have liked to see a bit more of his surrounding.
But the colours are stunning and the brightness springs right to the eyes...

Você acertou em cheio. :)
Parabéns pela foto e pela nota.
quase imperceptível está o reflexo da grade de proteção, mas em nenhum momento influi na beleza da foto.
Feliz Ano Novo.

Magnificent colours! The perfect sharpness allows the texture of the feathers to be seen so clearly. I love the bright red of the beak, decorated with some white on the top - actually all colours together are producing genuine scene of faery!

Oh my, this is beautifull Steven. The colours the sharpness. I don't know what to say. Just fantastic. Like the riples in the water and the posture of the bird.

I came to visit the cousin as indicates it GuyFortier in its comment. This duck is magnificent, the photo is clear and I like seeing its paws in the water.
Je suis venue visiter le cousin comme l'indique GuyFortier dans son commentaire. Ce canard est magnifique, la photo est claire et j'aime voir ses pattes dans l'eau.
