Photographer’s Note

This shot was taken during a ski run down Black Canyon near Jackson Hole, WY (access from Teton Pass). We came upon this little meadow at the base of the canyon near the stream bed. Every surface was covered with these crystalline feathers (technically known as surface hoar). This formation of water is essentially dew - vapor deposition on a radiation cooled surface. This actually becomes dangerous for a skier - it forms a weak layer when more snow falls on top creating a potentially unstable avalanche condition. But until new snow falls, this is the best stuff to ski in!
