prayer takes on a different meaning during the lenten season, when villagers of san pedro, cutud, engage in the act of self-flagellation. this ritual is performed on maundy thursday and good friday during the holy week. the back is cut and then struck with burillo whips (the bleeding is due to the cuts not just the the whipping itself). men in black veils (usually in groups of 2 or more) walk on set routes around the village, where at certain stages they get an extra strike or two from other participants. the climax to this occassion happens at mid-day on good friday , when penitents are literally nailed to their waiting crosses. a most fascinating event.

Hi Mark,

some may think that this horrible but, here you showed us the reality. Very good capture,

TFS,

Sarhan.

Mark, this is such a strong and insightful photo. It captures a moment of great intensity and mixed with your words creates a very vivid and real scene. Understandably one of the reason why we travel is to see these scenarios as they pose something that is different than what we know. Then add ourselves with a camera we are almost compelled to take shots like this to show others that aren't so fortunate of being able to travel there. It generates an awareness and a hopeful understanding, because at the end of the day we all need to understand one another if we are to press on with this thing called life.

Many thanks for sharing.

Wow...very interesting post Mark. Not an easy image to look at, but in a way, heart warming to see people who believe so completely in something, that they are willing to put themselves through this. Faith is a powerful thing! Thanks for sharing, I learned something new today. :)

Hi Mark,

it is an informative note and a powerful photo...it is hard for me to believe that this is for real...sad but true...thanks for sharing...cheers, artur

I agree that this is not the easiest or most comfortable image to look at but it is their choice and free will and of interest to see this does happen within a Christian as well as Muslim (and Hindu) context - I have not heard of this before - quite extraordinary to most western eyes I would think .

best wishes Kev
