Photographer’s Note
This echidna was busy eating ants under the gravel of this relatively busy footpath round Dove Lake. Echidnas are quite shy and this one hid its face under the gravel. So I stopped and waited for it to lift its head before I took the picture.
Echidnas, like platypusses, are monotremes - the only known animals to lay eggs and to suckle their young.
Please check WS for better frame

Hi Rachel,
This is very mysterious and amazing species of animal. I like your picture. Frame and colours are good. Great capture, well done.

Technically the picture is not perfect (centered composition, and I feel the animal is slightly off-focus), but this is such a weird looking animal, so uncommon to me, that I noticed this picture in the gallery and it interests me very much. I like your note too. Are they common in Tasmania?
