Visiting the Northern California Renaissance Faire, is an assault on all the senses. There is all matter of sales people disguised as renaissance people peddling their wares and talents. You can buy almost anything from custom made blown glass vases (made while you watch), to huge turkey legs smothered in onions or get a temporary tattoo. You can rent a costume and walk about pretending to be a royal or a pirate.
Although it is fun to go once the fairs differ little after going twice. This year because we had a cousin visiting and my niece had never gone, we decided to venture out to Casa da Fruta and take trip to commercialized replica of the past.
Under a ceiling made of a gorgeous patch work of orange and yellow canvas there was a group offering, (for a fee of course), to make henna tattoos. My niece and I decided to get matching henNa tattoo( they were temporary and washed away in 2 weeks). As we waited I was mesmerized by the artist’s concentration the girl’s face in anticipation, and the afternoon light filtered by the canvas.

I thought about cloning the modern items (the water bottle in the distance, the camera) but changed my mind because the fun thing of this fair is the combination of (perceived) renaissance times mixed with modernity.

Casa da Fruta Is a great place to stop when driving long trips between the Bay Area and anywhere south, they have the best candy, fresh fruit and nuts. One very good treat they have at the fruit stand is chocolate covered sunflower seeds. The coffee at Casa de Coffee is fantastic specially if you've been driving for a while and it's windy and cold.

The light is a bit harsh on the artist but everything I did to mellow it made her face and hands look unnatural. Cropped the photo a little, adjusted contrast a bit and levels too. Resized incrementally, sharpening slightly at each step. Flatten layers and saved.

Wow, i missed your pictures, i'm glad that you are back.
This is a very good shot, nice colors and sharpness.
You captured very well the essence of the moment. Very good experience, excellent natural lighting.
Well done Cristina.

Hi Cristina, I haven't been on trekearth for ages, so nice to see one of your photos when I did. I like the close intesity of this one. The real concentration. but also the flashes of light through the picture.

Hola Cristina: I love this moment because of the light, the concentration of both girls, the poin fo view. This is not an usual scene here in TE so thank you for this. Colors too, they are great. Best regards

Miguel

A beautiful photo. I like the colors very much here. Henna Tatto is very famous in India. You have capture a moment when artist is in work.

Hi Christina. Nice to see a new post from you. That's too bad it's so commercialized at the fair. At any rate this is a very interesting shot and a subject rarely seen on TE. I like the tight framing you went with here. Very nice catch Christina

Ola Cristina,

Bom dia, gostei desta foto, a beleza das tatuagens do qual eu pessoalmente gosto, nao em exagero (so tenho uma :)), em relação a foto gosto do pormenor e da cor, bjs manuel

Both participants are gazing so intensely, the artist to make a fine job and the visitor in eager anticipation for the result. I think it was a great idea to keep in the modern additions especially since I'm not a fan of cloning such things out if they are that obvious. And here they are an important part of the environment inhabited by these people, modern but looking back with a romantic view of the past. As you say it is a bit harsh on the artist but we get the main focus here fine.

I have been meaning to go to Michigan's Renaissance Fair for many years, now, but have never made it. Although I call ours a "Late Medieval English Fair" rather than a Renaissance one since it seems to focus more on that. Although this year they did have an Italian theme. Perhaps next year I'll make it. It would be a fun place, I think, for an anachronistic person such as myself.

Hi Cristina, A good capture of the details of the henna tattoo action. It is a popular street art in Los Angeles as well. I think most of their customers are ladies, for fashionable, not permanent tattoos.
Nice to show the concentrations of the artist and the enjoyment of the customer. Good capture of the shadowed area in contrasting with the area under the sunlight. A nice daily life shot.

Leonor

What a lovely, tender, sun-drenched scene you offer us here, Cristina. Well..light and shadow I shouyld say. It is so well balanced, there is so much of that whole Northern California (we haven't entirely forgotten the best of the '60s) thing about it, that it makes one smile, and feel grateful to you for posting this ray of sunshine into our lives.
Best wishes,
Francis
