Manifestations III
Gooseberry Badlands, Wyoming, USA.
This small badlands area lies just off minor road 431, northwest of Worland. You can pick up a walking guide - and a warning about the rattle snakes - in the Bureau of Land Management Office in Worland. Judging by the difficulty we had in picking a path, I'd say this area doesn't receive too many visitors, but if your passing - perhaps west to Yellowstone (as were we) - this area makes a great detour and contains many "small scale" geological wonders.
The original photo, (35mm negative) contains some pretty weird colours which I couldn't seem to get right in the scanned version, so I thought I'd try a black and white version. It was also necessary to do a bit of work on the sky to reduce the amount of visible greyscale noise.
Other small wonders can be seen in:-

Wow! :)) Excellent comosition and very dramatic landscape! Maybe you need more contrast and eventualy change skies for more dramatic mood. I think this one deserves stronger impact! :)) I will try workshop on this photo to show my crit in visual way... Hope you will like it! :))

Hi Colin. Whichever weird colors your original may have had, I think that the tonal range that is present in the b&w presentation (good choice) is pretty impressive. Good framing that showcases the formation in the foreground, and I also like the hovering clouds and the way in which they subtly echo the outline of the textures below them. Well done.

Colin
This has strong impact. Can't say what the colour version was like but this works well. And the sky looks good. Well done.

Hi Colin, I think your coloured photos have much more charm, but this b&w version is really interesting too - it has a more sombre character I suppose...I like it. The composition is, as usual, perfect:-)
Personally I prefer b&w to the workshop- the colours are interesting there too but I suppose the general quality is better here.

Hi Colin. I'm just looking over your gallery and I must say it's all so impressive. I love the use of strong foregrounds and this one is no exception. The b/w does work well here. I think I prefer this one over the workshop just because it looks so much more natural and realistic. Well seen Colin.
