Le dôme des Invalides Photo

Photographer’s Note

Les Invalides in Paris, France consists of a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement containing museums and monuments, all relating to France's military history, as well as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, the building's original purpose. It is also the burial site for some of France's war heroes. What is the most impressive in this place is the golden dome, which is 107 meters high. More details can be found on wikipedia.

I wanted to set the statue in the foreground to see what would happen...

I thought that the black and white mode would increase the strength (if there is) of the composition. I converted the color picture in black and white by considering the L layer of the Lab mode. I tuned the levels, removed the noise, sharpened the picture. The colored version of the picture is in the workshop section.

J'aime bien le lourd contraste ici, ça donne un aspect solennel à l'architecture. Un bel effet, bravo!

Bonjour Michael,
J'aime beaucoup ta photo, le n&b est judicieusement employé pour un très bel effet dramatique, d'autant que la croix est bien mise en valeur.
Cependant la photo est un peu de travers, il s'agirait simplement de la redresser un tantinet vers la droite.

c'est dommage qu'on aperçoive un liserait clair (sans doute du a une retouche du bruit dans le ciel sous PS) autour de la statue et de la coupole...

Sinon, le noir et blanc se prete bien à la scene. surtout avec un tel contraste et une telle netteté. J'aime bien aussi le ciel très foncé.

Ce n'est pas facile de traiter d'un monument aussi célèbre. Ici c'est la lumière et le cadrage qui font la beauté de l'image. Bien vu aussi cette statue qui se détache.

I like this picture, it has very Gothic overtones, but suffers with the halo effect that many conversions from colour to B&W do. Not that this is a bad thing, in fact I think that it adds to the mood of this photograph. Very nicely done and thanks for sharing.

this is really much more stronger than the ws version.and u converted to b&w with a good technique,I generally prefer the same steps.maybe u should better have rotated it 1-2 degrees in clockwise direction.

GReat composition. Putting in the statue makes it even better. As mentioned before, there is a slight tilt, but that can be corrected easily in PS. I like the B&W on this ccompo. Makes it more intriging to look at. Good job.

Je trouve cette photo très belle, les nuages derrière renforce le cote dramatique. Même si j'imagine qu'en couleurs la scène devait etre très joyeuse au niveau des couleurs !

Tres sympa ton pp qui a mon avis est bien plus esthetique que l'originale, le traitement en 2 parties est super, pour le petit halo a cause de la selection c'est pas tres grave.

Nice BW image. This choice works quite well here as BW enhances the shapes and volumes in a very positive way. Your POV is also very good, especially considering the inclusion and positioning of the statue. It’s a detail that brings a good value to the image .

tu as bien fait de poster la version N&B, elle est nettement meilleure au niveau de l'impact que celle en couleur.
Une très belle composition avec ces nuages qui ajoutent du volume au cliché.

Bonjour Michael.
La version couleur est très réussie mais la version noir et blanc a un aspect plus intemporel, qui convient bien à ce monument. La statue en premier plan, d'un général (lequel ?) accentue la référence historique et militaire du lieu.

Hi Michael
A very well executed B&W effect, but there's room for improvement.
First, you needed to level the image.
Secondly. I prefer this image of horizon view rather than portrait view. By horizontal view, you can place the statues and the building at one corner, right or left, and allowing more space at the other end. This will balanced up the picture.
And finally, this is still a good shot, Michael.

This is a great shot. The contrast against the sky is good and the brightness just perfect enhancing the marvelous architecture and art of the marvelous building. Les Invalides is a monumental complex that I admire a lot.

Un petit passage sur ta galerie me fait découvrir cette capture que j'apprécie fortement, le traitement N et B que tu as appliqué à deux des captures de ta galerie et vraiment bon , par le réglage de lumière et du contraste.J'ai lû tes explications sur le halo qui est effectivement dommage, enfin il faut bien qu 'il y ait un ptit défaut au sinon on n' a plus rien à dire nous :))
