Photographer’s Note

This is an interior shot from a very well preserved summer villa in the Stockholm archipelago. During the late 1800s to early 1900s many summer residences were built by successful merchants, industrialists and others of the high society in Stockholm. There are villas of this type all over Sweden and typically they are placed by the sea for many reasons. The obvious today of course is the beauty of land meeting water, but also because steamboats was the fastest way to travel at the time. This residence, Villa Gransäter, is an exceptionally well preserved house and has been in the same family ever since it was built, and they have preserved it in original shape. Generally these houses were built in wood and in a national romantic style. I had the opportunity to visit the villa this summer, and I was fascinated by these doors. Unfortunately, I did not have a wide enough lens to picture the room all the way to the ceiling. Also the lighting was tricky and I do not have proper flash for this task I think. However the light from the window maybe add som mystique to the picture? I liked the naked wood against the green and the white lying wooden wall panel. Note also the decorative hinges of the door, I beleive they are inspired by some Viking-era pattern.
