Photographer’s Note
Thousands of years ago, lions were common throughout southern Europe, southern Asia, eastern and central India and over the whole of the African continent. Today, with the exception of some 300 highly protected animals in the Gir National Park of India, the only naturally-occuring lions are found in Africa.
Lions are the only cats that live in large family groups. When the pride hunts as a group they employ an ambush that forces large prey into the waiting paws of the males. Females have the speed but lack the body weight to knock down large "family size" prey such as the wildebeast.
As a result of widespread persecution, cats in the wild have become one of the most threatened major groups of land animals. African lions are now listed as vulnerable by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature).

Hi Shannon,
Nice shot of this lion. I'm wondering, like Markos, how you could be so near! Did you use a big zoom? Anyway, good and sharp picture, with the lion just at the right place. It is sad to learn that this is one of the threatened species of the World. Bad, bad. But, your picture is good! TFS!

What a great portrait Shannon!!
When I was in Tanzania and I had a male-lion just in front of me, I discover that I only have 1 shot left in my camera and that the film I thought was new..........was finished.
Really love your shot :-)
Why dont you post in color in Workshop - would love to see it.

Hi Shannon,
I like this very much, it's very sharp (almost to sharp, but it's good) good choice of B&W and black border.

Excellent shot. Interesting choice for B&W. Thanks for posting the original as well. Not sure which I prefer. I've never had opportunity to try, but I can't imagine that this is an easy shot to manage of a wild lion. Well done! Perfect compo and POV.
