Photographer's Note

There are a lot of these mills along the windy Portuguese Coast, specially north of Lisbon. This mill is located 30 kms north of Lisbon (Sobral de Monte Agraco) and is now in good condition. These mills are now desactivated and many of them are in ruins. In the past, flour was produced by milling the grain under a big grindstone. The wind moves the great wheel when its sails (now rolled up) are unrolled. The pottery at the extremity of the wheel sticks produces a whirring whose intensity and tone aids the sleepy miller to appreciate the wind mood.
