The grass and the shadows are really beautiful. You play well with the sun !
Stéphane

Hi Adrian.
Very well photographed the structure and of course very well the shade that is created thanks to the sunlight.
Good work.
Luis.

Nice silhouette and the shadows create great contrasts on the grass. Light is good as are the colours. Maybe including the top of the ruin would be even better.
thanks,
Magnus

Adrian -

I like the image especially the shadows leading you into the ruin but I sense that the image is slightly out of focus. Did you use a tripod? A pod is a must for something like this. Also, I notice the very top of the structure has been croped out. Again, a pod would allow you to spend time and look around the edges for blunders.

Again nice image and thanks for sharing

Serwus Adrian !
The idea of taking this unique abbey against the sun was superb. Now we can admire the long shadows, leading sight from the forground to the main subject. I like also delicate and natural tones here.
Unfortunately,it is obviously missed part of the top of the ruin. Otherwise it is nice composition.
All the best,
Mat

good shot nels, nice long shadows, its a pity you cut off the top of the abbey, and also maybe a shorter speed would cut out some of the over exposed parts and make the abbey more silhouetty! i think also maybe off centering the shot so the building on the left wasnt visible would help the shot also, good shot and probably somewhere you will be visiting again!

Such a shape you chopped the top of this one Adrian! I love the long shadow, and the silhouetting of the abbey. I dont thinl the overexposure is as much as a problem as the missing top.

If you have any other with similar exposure with the top on you could play about and make it fit?

I was at the abbey yesterday morning to see the sunset but it was cloudy so I didnt get the shots I wanted :(

hallo Adrian, very good perspective in this pic! ok the shadow and the water background. only you should have left just a little more space above the church. Alex

One of the best Whitby Abbey shots on here Adrian, because of the light and near silhouette. Same criticism as the others about the missing top. I don't think it is out of focus like jwmunro says, just that the strong rays of the sun have softened the edges of the abbey itself. Other things in the same plane are perfectly sharp.

Great contrasts, the shadows and the dark silhouette. Very well captured. It's difficult to get a good picture taken against the sun, you did it. Excellent work.
Well done Adrian.

Hi adrian

I like the backlighting & long foreground shadows. Perhaps a bit of sharpening, & I would not have cropped the top of the old cathedral. I like the grey blue area of the sea at right. Good work, overall.

Hi Adrian, A nice facing the sun shot. I enjoy the shadow created by the sunlight through the ruin. A nice silhouette view of the ruin and a nice scenery.

I REALLY like this pic, but u shouldn´t crop the top of the ruin... but anyway, the composition, the ligth, the shadows and the contrast with the grass, were great !!!

Good evening Adrian!
Very beautiful and original composition, good view at the abbey, excellent light. Very well done

A very good photo. The shadow is strong and shows how impressive this abbey must have once been. Your best photo. TFS.

great shot you must of been lucky to catch the sun coming through like that
great shot

fantastic composition Adrian, with spectacular lights and shadows game..
maybe a little bit more sky on the high edge of the image would have been better..but still a GREAT PHOTO!!
well done, compliments!!
ciao, Fabio.

Godd silhouette - as pointed out already, its a pity that the top was cut off, but the overall effect is still very good.

Bonjour Adrian, superbe contre jour avec ce soleil un peu masqué qui fait ressortir en silhouette, ce chateau ou du moins ce qu'il en reste.
Excellent jeux d'ombres, un POV original.
Bien à toi.
Daniel.

A good silhouette and superb shadows. Just lissing the tip of the Abbey wall. But the shadows make this photo for me - the moment can be fleeting and you captured it well.
REgards Colin

Hi Adrian - god timing and I like the placement of the sun behind the ruin, shame about the top being cut off though.

Hi Adrian
I find this beautifull picture in your galery.
Very incredible light with this long long shadow.
I like the frame too.
Very beautifull, nice work !

Hello Adrian.
I will not repeat the negatives as they were already mentionned.
It is not easy to take a photo against the sun and you did a good job there and getting the long shadows at the same time.Your idea is original.
Nice job
Charles

Une très belle photo pleine de mystère avec un exposition parfaitement maitrisée. bravo

I love the shadow here Adrian. Great pic and perfect angle!

Similar to my Brighton Beach and pier, photo, you have caught the sun behind the remaining wall. Great job. I like the silhouetting effect.

regards,

Tom

Great perspective and picture Adrian! Congratulations. I would have prefered to see the top of the abbey, but I liked the effect of light on the grass. Good job!

What a great photo! The lighting is fantastic.
Cheers, Laura

Really nice shot Adrian! I really like the way that you captured the building with the sun streaming through the windows. The clouds in the sky and the green grass also give a nice touch.
Good work,
Katie

I love long shadows. This is a marvelous picture. I wish you had included the top of the abbey. Still the effect is superb. Nice colors and definition. Congrats, Gabriel

Great shot lovely long shadows
great rear lighting from the sun
NICE ONE
just one slight critique
the top apex is cropped off

Good idea, poinitng into the sun for dramatic effect, and it's a strong shot, but definitely one to go back and recreate, my suggestions for changes:
1. recompose with the ruin a touch further right in the shot
2. Carfeul not to crop the top of the Abbey
3. Then go for a black and white conversion as this is an ideal candidate for B&W
I learn the most by re-shooting a subject after I've alreday been once. Somehting impossible whilst travelling, but great when Whitby is near you. Go for it.

Hi Adrian,
I was going through your gallery, and noticed how much you favor the sun / sunlight! This photo is a stunner... shadows, greenery and the ruins as well.. good that you managed to get a bit of the sea also.
Well done!
Nivas

Hi Adrian, I really like the way you used the shadow as a lead-in line to the ruins, very clever.

Hi Adrian,
excellen shot, I like the idea to hide the sun behind the ruins of this building...
a small detail; you shouldn't cut the upper edge of the building...
cherubin

excellent game of lights, and contrejour...
i love the Pov..
very well done

C'est l'ombre portée par cette architecture qui fait de cette photo une grande réussite!!

Hello Adrian
Wow, amazing photo taken against the Sun. Excellent silhouettes of the wall. Nice colours. A bit shame that you`ve cropped the top ;).
Have a nice weekend.

Hi Adrian. I know this spot well and love the shot. Very dramatic - a touch of 'Bram Stoker' there, perhaps? Only criticism is that this might have worked better in portrait mode - to get the pinnacle and more of the shadow in view. Otherwise, excellent, Paul.

Adrian nelson,

Nice old ruin. well covered sun with ruin..
Green grass & tall wide shadows.

Really great image.
Very well done.

What a beuatiful picture! Very dramatic, Enligh, and Gothic!
Well done!

Hi Adrian,

An excellent silhouette, it has a very effective depth and a kind of perspective. Nice work.

Hi Adrian
I like churches pictures and particularly those in ruins. The powerful light emerging from behind may be seen as an allegory of God.

Hello, Adrian!
Very nice idea to show this church in a backlight. The shadows look beautiful and grass is very well saturated. I would only decrease lighting about -1EV to mage the building almost black (there would be some more details on the sky, too) and move the lens a little higher to get a full building in the cadre. Besides, very nice view!

Greg

A marvellous and excellent backlight shot Adrian .Very well captured this ruin with the beautiful shadow effects on the grass .Perfect work

Adrian

This is a strong composition, well executed technically. Despite the high contrast you've kept detail in the shadows and avoided any lens flare. Good job.

Cheers

Richard

Great backlight, compliments, you have well managed the light in this image, it's a pity the crop of the church, anyway this image have interesting subject and good atmosphere.
Ciao
Vinicio

I like this, because of the shadows cast in the sunlight, good colour, looks like a lonely place, but monks did like solitude, shame about the missing tip, but I think you removed the top because the sun would have been burning it, but it's still a good photo.

Helo Adrian
How mistycal biulding and your greath presenting
Bravo Camarad

P S where are your new work mate?

almost perfect...99.99% i rate it because you cropped one of the structures' "pinnacle"...but deservwes the green smiley still.
benedict

Hello Adrian,
Creative play with shadows, most eye-catching!
Backlight is fascinating, only drawback it ALWAYS leaves the sky as no sky at all...
The green lawn looks wonderful, and I like the composition!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Adrian, The light is fantastic & the shadows stunning, your chose of POV is perfect utilizing the abbey to block the rays of the sun, great colours & wonderful composition, TFS, take care, kind regards Wilson.

I saw this on your intro page, and I think it's excellent. Those long shadows are really something and they make a superb contrast with that vibrant gree.
A bit of a shame about the over-exposed sky, but hard to avoid when shooting into the light, especially with digital.
I would have liked to have seen a bit of a gap between the apex of the abbey and the edge of the frame, but other than that, this is excellent.
Good stuff Adrian.

Cheers,
Ben

Awesome use of light and shadow. It would have been nice to get the top of the structure but it's still a cool shot. I really like the solid building on the left hand side. It's a great contrast. Thanks for sharing

Hi Adrian,

Shadows and your composition are really great. It is like "hide and seek" game. Where is the sun? :) its duty is so big, it creates great shadows.. Good Work!
