Photographer’s Note

The Guarapiranga Reservoir occupies an area of 630km2 and, since 1927, it has been one of the Reservoir Complex (the others are Billings, Alto Cotia and Cantareira) which supplies São Paulo with potable water.
The disorganized occupation of the land around the reservoir was, and still is, one of the biggest problems to the environment. Between 1978 and 1989, 13 eruptions of poisoning algae due to sewage being poured in the reservoir required immediate action from the government, otherwise we would face a major crisis.
Nowadays, 750000 people live around the lake, 100000 in “favelas”, still with no sewage treatment.
Although discouraging, our gold medal Torben Grael sails there once in a while.
I leave you with an image I couldn´t imagine I would ever post.
For Bert, who has a traveling tale to tell.

Those who know my work, my style, will certainly notice how huge an effort this image is.
