Photographer’s Note
L'International des Feux Loto-Québec was founded in 1985 at La Ronde, Québec's largest amusement park, which was created for Expo '67. From the very first year, the Competition was a smash success. On the evenings when there were fireworks presentations, La Ronde was filled to capacity and the city of Montréal witnessed unprecedented levels of crowd movement. More than 5.7 million people attended the displays in the first season, setting a record in Canada for this kind of event. As a result of this extraordinary level of success, the Competition was repeated the following year. Since then, it has been an annual event, gathering crowds of enthusiasts, including citizens from the greater Montréal area and numerous tourists.
Here the countries which take part to win a Jupiter award which will be represented by the amazing protechnics firm Göteborgs FyrverkeriFabrik and the sountrack playing in this remarquable 30 minutes fireworks.
Every year, Gold, Silver and Bronze Jupiter trophies are awarded to the winners. The Jupiters have become symbols of prestige within the fireworks industry, providing the winners with a true mark of distinction. The name of the trophies is derived from Roman mythology; Jupiter was the god of the sky, of daylight, and of natural elements such as thunder and lightning.

In its third year, the Montréal International Fireworks Competition enlisted the services of Giovanni Panzera as artistic director. He brought to the event his vast experience in the field. He was the initiator of the first musical fireworks displays ever held in Europe and an organizer of the Cannes Fireworks Competition from 1973 to 1983. Mr. Panzera also fine-tuned the famous Roman Candle for his own company, Panzera S.A.S., based in Turin, Italy. The year 2000 marked the end of the close association between the "maestro" of pyromusical arts and La Ronde for Giovanni Panzera died on September 6 at the age of 70. His fine artistic sense and his unsurpassed knowledge of the fireworks industry enabled him to set the tone for the Competition and to play a significant role in the event's success. His mission was to make Montréal the hub of pyrotechnic arts and to bring about an expert appreciation among the public.
I've kept the silhouette of people at the bottom, we can also see the big wheel from LaRonde amusement park on the bottom left, enjoy.

Bonjour Pierre,

Hi Pierre. A good catch from the fireworks, with a nice rendition of the colorful shapes and traces in the 5 sec exposure. I like that you kept the people silhouettes in the foreground for context and interest. Very nice.

Bravo!

Hi Pierre. You have really nailed this shot! This shot is a textbook in how to shoot fireworks shots. I never would have thought to use a tripod and a 5 second exposure. And it's even more impressive that the people stayed still enough that long to not get a ghost effect. Most impressive Pierre!!

Muy interesante foto de las luces variadas de los fuegos artificiales.
La silueta oscura de las personas en la parte anterior ayuda a darle profundidad a tu foto.
Well done Pierre.

Beautiful fireworks capture. The fireworks are so crisply captured in the sky. The colors offer a nice bang against the blackness of the night and give that bank of the explosion. I think the silhouettes of the people are a very important part of the shot. They give a nice point from which to move into the fireworks. It gives a good feel for how people are awed by these beautiful displays. Very well done.

An outstanding firework shot, Pierre, and a superb note to go along with it. I'm surprised to know that Gothenburg is the home of an 'amazing pyrotechnics firm'. The shot itself is very well composed and exposed at the exact amount of time, allowing for multiple cascades in different colors in the sky together with intense white crackers in the center. It's almost possible to hear the sound. At the same time the silhouettes of people remain sharp and they allow for depth in the darkness surrounding this spectacle. Very well done!

Due to serious computer problems – go to my intro page for further information – I've not been able to upload or critique as much as I'd like. In an effort to rectify this, I'll do my best to catch up on your shots – but will probably not be able to write a comment on all of them. I hope you understand.

Very beautiful picture Pierre! What makes this stand out from the rest of the firework pictures is your capture of the foreground crowds and electrical wires composed very nicely in your frame.

Salutations. Luis.

Hi Pierre,
Missed this earlier shot in your gallery. Great control of light with a superb exposure level here. I like the dichotomy between the utter blackness and the fireworks. The silhouetted figures also enhance. All the very best for the coming New Year, Pierre.
