Only three minutes' walk from York Minster, York Art Gallery displays a mixture of nationally and internationally acclaimed works of art. With an innovative programme of supporting events, talks and tours, there is always something new to experience.

York City Art Gallery is remarkable for the range and quality of its collections, which are of local, national and international importance. The Gallery provides a survey of most developments in Western European painting over the last six centuries, from early Italian gold-ground panels to the art of today. Permanently displayed are works by Bellotto, Reynolds, Lowry and York-born Etty. Exciting changing exhibitions and complementary events throughout the year.

The Gallery building opened in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition. The architect Edward Taylor was employed to design the temporary wooden building used to house the 1879 exhibition. Taylor was retained by a group of York citizens after the exhibition to design a more permanent gallery. A site was secured within the grounds of St. Mary's Abbey, a design agreed and the building which we see today was erected. It became the City Art Gallery in 1892.

The Art Gallery building has a façade in the Italian Renaissance style, although sadly most of the proposed carved-stone and tile decoration was not executed. Four sculpted roundels between the arches of the entrance loggia depict famous artistic sons of York, namely John Carr the architect, John Camidge the musician, John Flaxman the sculptor and William Etty the painter, whose statue can be seen here, placed between the fountain and the front of the gallery building.

Hi Robert,
Great capture and good composition. Excellent light and colours. Very well done! :-D
Groetjes,
Lars

Superb image. The fountains, the building and the staue are perfectly balanced, and the lighting perfect. The comprehensive note is much appreciated and is a model for other TE-ers.

I like the photo Robert. It has great detail, great lighting and is a perfect example of how you don't place the main object (the statue) in the middle of the frame.

A beautiful night shot, Robi - the exposure is ideally mastered to render the variety of illuminations, I would say. Compo-wise, the statue is well placed in the frame, and the water jets in the foreground are echoing the shapes of the arches on the building in a fun way. Well done.

Great low light shot - the arcs of the water fountains almost echo the arches of the building :)

Hi Robert,
good night picture, the exposition is very good.
I like the water fountains in the bottom.
The statue is well placed, too.
I like the colors of the arches.

Hi Robert, what a shot! You made excellent use of the provided lighting. With the 1/3 second exposure you get a nice flow effect in the fountain. It was a very wise decision to use tri-pod. I would have been tempted to jack the ISO to 1250 and hand hold that bad boy, but you are more patient than I! An incredible shot Robert.

Just a wonderful exposure and composition, Robert. The handling of light and shadows is expertly done. The other comments pretty well say it all. And I must say the arcs of the fountains do add a further dimension to the shot. Well done.

Good use of the available light in this nightshot to spot out some details to a darker background still good readible.

Hi Robert,
This is a great composition with beautiful colours and lighting. I like the contrast between the illuminated statue and the dark background. Well done!

Thanks,
