Photographer’s Note

The Vietnam Wall Memorial has been a moving experience for me both times I've seen it, as it is for many people. Wars don't just kill soldiers and bystanders, they often kill the spirit of the survivors and damage the families of the fallen.

This woman was searching for a name of a family member, knowing it was there, needing to see it, but dreading the moment she has to lean on the wall for support. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

The original image was in color. I wanted to emphasize the blackness of the wall, so I duplicated the background layer, desaturated the new layer, then used a soft eraser to brush color back into her cap. Then I cropped the image, adjusted the levels, and sharpened and resized it before uploading.
