Photographer’s Note
This is the island of Santorini. The great Mediterranean stretches out beneath the harsh rocks that lifts the main town Fira into the air, looking like snow on top.
Santorini, officially called Thera, is one of the Cycladic islands and a historically active volcano.
It is also part of the legend of Atlantis. In 1640 BC there was a large eruption, much bigger than the 79 AD Vesuvius eruption, that ended the power of the Minoans on Crete. The geology changed and what was once a circle-shaped island had now transformed into the crescent of today. Could this be the island that Plato described?
Go there and have a look for yourself, you will not regret it. One of the most spectacular places I've ever seen.
