[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photograph was taken from the tower earlier in the day than yesterday's picture - the bright blue sky and sunshine make it look delightful weather BUT the wind was strong and decidely icy -my son is actually down behind the parapet of the tower afraid to stand up in case he is blown away. It was biting.

The impact of this hole in the ground (limestone quarry) on the rolling lines of the vista was visually stunning.

Crich is the home of the National Tramway Museum which is set in the limestone quarry. The museum includes authentic period street scenes, including the facade of Robert Adam's beautiful Derby Assembly Rooms which was damaged by fire and subsequently demolished. There are several exhibitions and a variety of vintage trams from all over the world.

A tramway was originally installed by George Stevenson to carry limestone from the Cliffe quarry to the lime kilns at Ambergate. Limestone is still mined at the quarry. George Stevenson often stayed at the Wheatsheaf Inn in the village.

Lead had been mined at Crich since Roman times and the limestone was quarried for lime burning and road making. In the 18th century there were many lime kilns in the village centre.

The 19th century saw a new local industry developed, that of framework knitting. Knitting frames were installed in the upper rooms of cottages or in adjacent outbuildings. Cotton was distributed and work collected from the village warehouses. In 1857 there were about 100 such frames in Crich.

Like many of these villages the car now allows for people to work across the district and travel to work in the cities of Derby, Nottingham or the smaller towns from the M1 through to the Peak District. Many of our more beautiful areas house substantial commuter populations but Derbyshire does retain a strong local identity amongst it's population.

Wow these clouds look so threatening, I like the sight of this landscape. I think the composition is very well balanced, there are light and dark zones.
Well seen Kev.

hi kev, this is a tricky one: i looked at it for quite a while in order to understand which area of the image was supposed to be the main subject, and you know what? i think that the beauty of the picture comes from the multi-leyer composition; however - sky dominates, that's certain; and i think clouds are very important here;
nice study of layers, patterns, and tones;
take care, j.

Hello Kev,
Excellent, tu as pris la photo au moment où l'éclaircie épousait presque le forme du cratère.
Un ceile parfait aussi.
Good job.
Best regards.
Daniel.

Good composition and POV. The earth tones are very effective, and the landscape scene could well be a painting, but without blur or too much softness. Perhaps I might have cropped a little of the foreground. An enchanting, masterful shot.

A fine landscape unusual through the standing framing. And what a details you show here with good gradiant shadows to lead us to the horizont meeting this fenominal light in this hole in the ground fine textured.
An excellent photo Kev and good note.

This is a beautiful picture!
Great colors and composition. Wonderful sky ;) Well done.

Take care,
Susana

Wonderful dramatic lighting! The browns in the front point the eye towards the "abyss", and the greens in the back point the way out. Very effective composition, and very interesting note! I love those wild stunted bushes/trees. Well done!

Great shot, and an excellent description! I'm originally from Holloway (just over the nearest hill in the shot), so I know the area well, and you've captured it beautifully.
