Photographer’s Note

My sister and I took a hike today. It was really a very wet Spring day. We only took our cameras out a few times. I took this photo of one of the common local Balsam Root plants in bloom.

This member of the sunflower family loves sunshine and wide-open places. It has big green leaves, which are shaped like arrowheads. The yellow flower resembles sunflower, but the middle of the flower is also yellow. (On many sunflowers, it's brown.) Native Americans in some areas used the root for medicine.
