Waterwise

Waterwise is a schools-based practical and hands on water safety and water confidence programme in Auckland, New Zealand, that teaches children how to have safe enjoyment of our rivers, lakes and seas. Activities include sailing, kayaking and water confidence skills. While not a Yachting New Zealand managed programme, Waterwise is a programme we support the promotion of as a means to introducing children to the marine environment.

The fundamentals of the Waterwise programme are…
An excellent introduction to basic water skills
Strongly promote the safety message
Involve parents and teachers in a facet of the education curriculum

A Waterwise Centre generally operates from an established yacht club, utilising their premises which are normally vacant during school term week days. It stores the yachts, canoes, rescue craft, lifejackets and equipment.
A Waterwise centre benefits the whole community
The Waterwise Centre is used five days a week for a minimum of two full terms of the school year
The Waterwise Centre is available for other sectors of the community at weekends and school holidays
The Waterwise Centre develops water safety awareness to all members of the community - irrespective of their age.

Murrays Bay Waterwise is run from the Murrays Bay Sailing Club and involves 5 local schools. Here you can see the parents / teachers checking over the Kayaks and Optimists all lined up waiting for the children to go sailing.
