Collapsed, the famous "Azur window" of the island of Gozo in the Maltese archipelago.
Following the recent storms, the famous rocky arch which had become the emblem of Gozo collapsed with the onslaught of the waves. This is what the news of the day tells us.
Here a picture, taken in April 2006, of a landscape that has now disappeared. Pity !

I'm lucky to have seen this beautiful place some years ago. I feel so sorry, I think they should consolidate the rocks to prevent them crumbling.
ikeharel (78229) 2017-03-08 23:26
Long shutter on a precise moment when the big wave pounded had created a marvelous effect on the scene.
People up on the arch gave superior scale, the naturally created imposing rock formation is an exceptional sight collected.

Helle Jean, I was also shocked to read that this icon of Malta collapsed. Great picture with theses big waves.
Impressive composition, fantastic sharpness. Difficult to believe what happened.

yes, it is a pity, but this is the way of nature, destroying and creating new wonders at each moment. I remember a natural sculpture I saw in peru that was destroyed few days after a big earthquake.nice this view with the people up there and the big splash. perfect moment and memory.

Bonjour, cher Jean,
Une photo de 2006 qui n'a pas pris une ride quant à sa beauté particulière présentant la mer en furie, l'on comprend pourquoi les falaises s'effritent au fil du temps.
Très belle composition.

Yes, I saw it on the news last night that the Azure Window had collapsed and wondered how many people had visual records of it.
Thank you for posting this, it brings back happy memories!
It is a very beautiful record!
I love how the sea is surging around it and that people on the 'bridge' give the whole scene a visual scale.
Thank goodness no-one was on it when it collapsed!
My warm regards,

I just read the article of the destruction by nature of this photogenic and filmish monument in my daily newspaper. Now I’m confronted by this picture of you and also Malgo that we have to do it with images of this unique gate.
Have a nice day

Tu as bien capturé la puissance des vagues. La présence des personnes a un effet d'échelle de grandeur. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de l'arche. La qualité de la lumière embellit les couleurs de l'image. Bonne journée.

I saw this morning a picture of member Malgo with the same picture, but she as model fore the arch.
You chose a very nice angle with the blue sea and the arch very nice photographed.
Pleasant panoramic view with superwide image with the sea as subject.
An excellent depth and perspective.
Sharpness and clarity are superb.
Very well done, TFS.
Sergiom (88217) 2017-03-09 6:34
Toi et Malgo, presque voisins aujourd'hui racontez la même histoire sur le même lieux. Une chance qu'il n'y avait personne sur l'arche le jour où elle s'effondra.L'éclaboussure est stupéfiante à l'avant plan.

What a pity, this is a great documentary photo, maybe someone will take photos of the collapsed rock and will show us this rock in recent days
Cricri (125818) 2017-03-09 8:31

The same thing happened in Australia at London Bridge along the Great Ocean Road, but left some tourists stranded on the new island. They had to be rescued by helicopter! Good shot of how it used to look. Tfs!

this looks much better and more vivid that what they showed us in the news. How quick can a "simple" holiday souvenir turn into a historical document, alas!
TFS, et un bon weekend!

very sad news indeed, the sight of the famous natural monument collapsing must have have been horrendous and looking at the people standing on top of the arch feels really scary. The waves are so impressive, the light and the colours so beautiful. This is a superb memento of the lost landmark. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

yes, just as Malgo has done, you posted a thoughtful shot of the Azure Window. Perhaps I should do the same. I'm lucky that I was here only a year or two ago.
I've seen the new photos of it, it just doesn't look the same anymore - very sad. Hopefully nobody was walking across it when it collapsed. Your shot is different from Malgo's as its quite stormy in yours, I like it.

great the view as the presentation of the Azur window with the wild waves to splash on the rocks. The tiny visitors on it add scale in the image.Excellent presentation.

That's how nature provides us with sights to treasure, bet it's noisy witnessing the thunderous splash - the dynamic energy of water that is beautifully portrayed here. An opportunity extremely well grabbed. Congrats

You're lucky that you were able to see and capture this iconic place.
The smashing waves and the deep blue see give a special atmosphere to your photo.

What a wonder of nature, which you have been able to enjoy and immortalize, in addition at a good time, with blue sky and the wild sea with those waves that crash against the rocks, I enjoy with your images, since I was never in Malta.
Very effective colorful, highlighting details of the image.
Very well done. I like it.
Enjoy the weekend.
My best wishes for you.

With this damage which will be repeated, your photo has become historic, beautiful picture pity around the stone bridge!

I have created a special theme in which I have tried to gather all pictures of this lost rock formation.
Your picture presents the arch in all its glory and the splashing wave I suppose illustrates well the reason why it finally collapsed.
I like also the presence of people on top which allows those who couldn't see it in person to imagine the scale of the window.
Breath taking spectacle of nature.

I decided to critique this magnificent, but sad, sad scene that no longer exists. The waves crashing into the cliffs in Malta create a beautiful action shot.
Yesterday you critiqued a similar scene, the Unfortunate King Sebastian that I had just posted. If you are as curious about the statue's destruction click on the following newspaper account to find the answer: Daily Mail 25 November 2016. It will make you as angry as it has made me.
mcmtanyel (28962) 2017-03-17 21:04
I am so sorry to read that this interesting formation collapsed. You must be glad you were there before the tragic incident and took this photo. See, you were making history. From the article I read, it sounds as if they were expecting it to collapse, I wonder if they could have done some reinforcement work to make it last longer. Oh well, it's all past now.
