| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Container ships, getting ever bigger, bring us most of what we use. If you live in the West, chances are the computer you are using and the chair you are sitting in as you look at this, came from across the sea in a container.
These huge ships carry up to 8,000 containers which are 8ft by 8ft and either 20 or 40 ft long. That's plenty big enough to hold all the contents of an average Western family's home. Indeed in some countries containers are being recycled into homes or offices (e.g. at the airport in Barbados).
A major concern is the security of the vast number of containers travelling the world on approximately 2,600 container ships. It is very expensive and time-consuming to inspect these huge tin cans. So most aren't....the implications of which are obvious.
As for loading/unloading: This has to be fast to keep the operation cost-effective. If you look carefully under the bridge you will see 3 orange cranes used for these ships. I think the turn-around time in port is 2 or 3 days.
These two ships are coming in and going out of Vancouver harbour under Lions Gate Bridge.
Technical: Telephoto lens, cropping, some levels and hues enhancement, sharpened, and assembled via Picture Package in Photoshop. |

Nice composition you have made here. Soft pictures and yet details. Well done.
nice info and photos. I like the bottom one much more than the top one, because of the nice sunset on the ship.
I really appreciate your time in writing this note, living on Baffin Island, container ships are a big part of our reality here! Although they are probably the 'baby ships', not these super-size vessels. I really like how you have featured these two photos in comparative framing, and you have excellent clarity. Obviously the lighting was different between the two shots.
Good combination John. The smoky offender (ship) is clearly at it in this one. this comment accompanies the previous one I sent on your awakening photo. I see the start of an interesting series!
