St. Annes pier Photo

Photographer’s Note

A day trip to the seaside in winter can be quite bracing - so...

This image was taken in St. Annes - a small seaside resort near Blackpool.

I am also posting images of this day out on my Treklens site at the moment.

'The twin towns of Lytham and Saint Annes are nowadays jointly referred to as Lytham St Annes as their separate boundaries are virtually indistinguishable, although residents may beg to differ, for old loyalties die hard.
Lytham is a quieter, less commercially developed resort when compared to its immediate northern neighbour, Blackpool, and for this reason it is much favoured by older people and those who seek a more peaceful seaside experience. It has extensive golden sands, and because the sea lies a good way out, and the tidal race is slow and gentle, it is an ideal place for small children, and its shoreside facilities reflect this.
The old Victorian pier, which lies centrally on the beach has been totally renovated in recent years.

Great clarity on this photo. Everything is sharp from the pier to the sand and clouds, and such vivid colours.

At the begining when I saw the thumbnail, I thought that it was a train!!
Good suprise to see that this is a seaside resort!
Excellent capture of the clouds.
Good usage of the curve that gives good perspective.

A wonderfully clear and colourful shot. Good contrast in the sky. The curve of the pier leads the eye nicely into the frame.

Beautiful picture and great POV. Ithought it was a train looking at the thumbnail. It looks slightly tilted, but that could be an effect of the POV.

A very pleasing and sharp photo. I would have cropped the foreground a little, as the additional sand does nothing to enhance. But the clarity and POV are excellent.

A photo also near the "SEA"! Good quality, composition, excelent colors and contrast. The old Victorian pier is very beautiful and is very well enquadrated in this nice beach scenery!

At the thumb I thought that is one train composition:-))).
Amazing sharp photo with chrisp colours. Again nice sky with low clouds. I love the horisone line on the left.

Again excellent colors and contrast. The image has a very strong feel to it. And the perspective is great. Details are perfect down to the sand and grasses. I like the empty feel of this photo, too. It's so warm and inviting yet, because of the emptiness, it has a cold, winter, feel. Certainly not the place to go swimming at this point in the year. This has a nice wide feeling feel, too. Perhaps if you had cropped just that tiny bit at the top to link the pier's top to the corner it could have made for a slightly stronger draw from that point and perhaps a little from the bottom to move the horizon just a bit more off center. It still is another excellent, sharp, capture.

I used to live in St. Annes on and off between 1975 and 1980 and, although the pier didn't look like this, the place felt just this way. It reminds me of the St. Anne's Hotel which had a ballroom and "the head". This was all you could see of the small woman who used to do her Reginald Dixon impersonation on a Friday night.

Ah my! Nostalgia.

As for the image, is it me or is the pier falling to the right? Or is the horizon on the wonk? The sharpness is great though and looks very natural. Is that what you get from a good lens and small aperture?

Hello Stephen, I did not saw that one and I like it with this movement of the pier. Colors are quite soft too. Perhpas it is a little tilted on right. The note is excellent, I have understand completely your text (my english is little). Good.
