I think that everyone going to Georgia wants to see this famous church Tsminda Sameba. It means the Holy Trinity and there is also big church in Tbilisi with the same name. Not only the church is worth visiting, also the way to it, Georgian Military Road is spectacular.
One can go by marshrutka, very cheap, but than you see wonderful landscape behind the windows and you are unhappy that you can't stop for photos. Beisdes, there are interesting places on the way, like Ananuri fortress and Jvari Pass also worth visiting, so we took a taxi. We started early in the morning and as the day in Georgia begins rather late, the driver was not glad with it.
The Georgian Military Highway Voyenno-Gruzinskaya doroga, is a mountain road that crosses the Greater Caucasus Mountains and connects Tbilisi in Georgia with the Russian town of Vladikavkaz in North Ossetia. It passes through narrow gorges squeezed between colossal mountains, which makes for some amazing views.
This epic journey across the traditional boundary of Europe and Asia reaches nearly 2,400 m in the Jvari Pass and is dominated by the massive Mount Kazbek whose 5,033 m peak straddles the continental divide.
Despite being a rough ride, it is the easiest way to navigate the political minefield of the Caucasus region and to travel between Russia's Northern Caucasus and the countries of the southern Caucasus.
My POV is similar to Paul's, but the time of the year was different, and as you can see, we had all this for ourselves. We were even afraid that the road would be closed, with snow or mud, but it was OK.

Hi Malgo. How far from Tbilisi is this church? Did you go on the "epic journey to Vladikavkaz" If I was a native from Kavkaz I would find the name of the town disturbing as I would in Vladivostok if I was a native from that area. Surprised that there is no town by the name of Vladipolska. Stunning photo, incredible setting for a church. Pozdrav. Klaudio.

This is a superb view of the church beautifully outlined against the backdrop of the snow covered mountains. The entire rustic foreground depicted with excellent clarity and with the road leading to the top makes this a spectacular composition.
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

My congratulations, Malgo. Thumbs up! I remember this place on the summer photos of Paul. But this "winter" view is attractive too. Impressive lifeless background.
Thank you very much for so interesting reports from Georgia and Armenia!

You have captured so dramatically the nature and history in this region of the Caucasus - fantastic! This is such a famous church, but also typical of so much ecclesiastic architecture in the region, and the mountain, that is fabulous! Each works so well to set off the other.
Enjoy a great weekend,

Good evening Malgo,
The snowy mountain slop far beyond the church atop of the hill, had made this picture so superior view.
Contrast between and the view of the towers above a barren land with a trail up - all given a majestic "feel" when looking at.
My cong.'s, fabulous achievment from a great POV.
Have a nice weekend,

Very impressive site. I wish I could go there. TFS'

The monastery looks the same but the surroundings are different from Paul's photos. The solid, snowy mountainside forms a superb background and is almost as impressive as the monastery itself.

Very attractive 'zoom lens' view of Tsminda Sameba for the mountain top architecture and a bonus with the magical snow textured background.
Remote, appealing history, and must be a fine adventure.

Superbe!

Ahhh Itchy Feet, do you ever get tired?
The places you visit, wow. Excellent photo which looks to have been taken from the end of the Earth. I like the soft colours, the excellent depth of field and of course your energy in actually climbing to this far-flung place and bringing us the photo.
PS: Just back from post-cyclone Far North Queensland - back to reality tomorrow for work :)

adramad (40178) 2014-04-26 8:04
Stunning composition of great beauty, spectacular architecture of this monastery, at the very top of this mountain, with the golden color of dried grass, rugged mountain slope covered with snow, is a spectacular background.
Excellent brightness and very good focus.
Very good job. I like.
Enjoy the weekend.

Brawo! Super kadr!

A beautiful and isolated place high on a mountain pass. It seems that the winter is just going away and nothing is green yet. I wonder if they keep that road open all year?
Impressive architecture, I guess it has provided very important shelter in older times. Background mountains look really massive.
PaulVDV (24191) 2014-04-27 9:45
I would have enjoyed it to have this place for ourselves ... but there were really many visitors.
This prompted me to go hiking further to other spots from where I had magnificent views of the church and the surrounding landscape.
The white mountain slope is a fantastic backdrop. It gives the feeling that the church is built very very high.
Also different for me is the brown land on the foreground instead of the green meadows in the summertime.
This is a really impressive presentation of the church. I'm afraid I would fear a bit the cold.
Best regards, Paul

prawdziwy opad szczeny! To tlo dodaje widokowi atrakcji. Pokazujesz zreszta cale mnostwo pieknych widokow z tej podrozy i zauwazam je rzucajac czasem okiem do galerii -jednak jestem ostatnio o wiele mniej aktywny.
macjake (60580) 2014-04-30 7:06
I enjoy this composition too, really like how the church is perched way up at the top like the cherry ontop of an ice cream :)
the white mountains are a good bg too. smart choice!
too bad the taxi driver was a bit unhappy at the end :)
I'm working alot in the next few days before we leave for our trip, i'll try to get back to you in the email as soon as i can.

similar p.o.v. with Paul's pic but with different landscape colors. Amazing place surrounded by mighty mountains.

What a wonderful place, your shot is amazing!
InasiaJones (31562) 2014-05-08 23:36
Do you really need a permanent address when you are actually always on the road? You have a very unique chance to be able to see so many destinations.
What a dramatic presentation you came up with, as the mighty snowy mountain is dressing like a wall behind this church, making it look so vulnerable and humble. The contrast between both layers is visually stunning, and there's a sense of dimension coming out of your image that I really appreciate.
mcmtanyel (16001) 2014-06-08 19:54
What a grand photo, showing this spectacular church with the majestic snow covered mountain in the b/g. A photo that should be made into a tourism poster for Georgia! Congratulations & TFS.
Wanda1 (15000) 2014-06-11 3:03
This is a spectacular scene, the sheer white background of the mountain is dramatic and the church looks majestic against it. I like the subdued colour palette, and just the feeling of being out in the middle of nowhere with only the elements of harsh weather for company. Well framed and presented.
GiovanniG (3000) 2014-07-03 19:53
I really love this special place with wonderful colors and exposure.
