Church of Bagarat-Arkaun, also known as the church with frescoes, is one of the remaining buildings in the ghost city of Ani on the Turkish Armenian border. Although heavily vandalized and used for target practice by soldiers, the frescoes are still in reasonable condition, considering the church was built in the 10th century, and Ani has been invaded and sacked several times by the Byzantine Greeks, the Turks, the Georgians, & Genghis Khan. It also suffered from the Black Plague, and a devastating earthquake in the 14th century. It is now an abandoned ghost city. The bg Akhourian river forms the border between Turkey at left, and Armenia at right. I've added a closeup from a link to wikitravel showing the frescoes on the entrance.
This is a link to Wikitravel
This church is #31 on the map of Ani.

Superb capture with the ancient church - that has withstood many calamities, both natural and man made - displayed in beautiful detail and colour and the lovely surrounding landscape. The view far into the horizon with the accompanying sharpness is outstanding. The figures in the fg are perfectly utilised.
Thanks for sharing this lovely picture.

Hello Chris ,
Very well chosen POV , to show us this plunging view on this superb polychromatic church , with the curve of the river and beautiful green pastures in the Bg .
PaulVDV (21945) 2014-04-01 12:31
Excellent picture showing how the gorge with the river divides both countries. On the political level they are even much further removed from each other.
You found an excellent high POV to present us this wonderful green landscape.
Beautiful architecture and the reddish brown colour of the church makes it stand out in this grass landscape.
Best regards, Paul
ktanska (24606) 2014-04-01 12:32
That certainly looks ancient, great to see that it is relatively well preserved. Those green colours look also lovely, nice variation from fresh bright green to dryer brown tones. And that little river deep down in a canyon is the icing on the cake.

Ciao e buona serata

The distance between the church and the mountains in the background is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showinfg the details and the colours of the church. The good luminosity is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Very nice capture of this ancient church in beautiful setting. Your high vantage point gives an excellent overview of the surroundings and the contrasting features of the landscape. The depth of field is perfectly managed and the image has lovely natural looking colours and superb sharpness. Nice to see two countries in one shot, although nature doesn't seem to make much difference (however, it seems to me that the grass looks a bit greener on the Armenian side !).

Awesome perspective, Chris, with the canyon and river running away from the church in BG. A shame the building is in ruins, along with the rest of the town, but at least some of it - along with those frescoes - remains intact. Nice capture, and thanks for the posts from a unique location.

Do you realize yesterday we were neighbors and commented and answer notes at the same time, really funny
Yes , the POV and the vertical format, both helps to highlight church and landscape with the river leading the view to the very back
Quite attractive and interesting building (what reminds of it)first time I saw it, wowwwwww, frescos are going, hope some organization like Unesco restore them in a not far future
Good work, for once something similar at what is Paul doing, discovering forgotten building in far away places
Very well done, congrats
Remember to have a look at your catures from Marrakech

Chris, a fascinating structure, that looks like it was expanded more or less at random over the centuries. Well-captured, with a long view to the horizon giving us a great feel for the landscape in which it sits. Good color contrasts between the green grass and the brown/orange of the church itself. Thanks.

This is a super vantage point Chris. It gives a very good overview of the fascinating church with its location next to the boundary river. The strong light has been well managed and you present excellent details in the architecture with good texture and colour.
A fabulous 'find' and a super TE contribution.

You choose a nice point of view on this church. Its roof is quite strange.
The light is beautiful.

What remains of this church is really interesting with a very attractive architecture. The church is also situated in a very beautiful surrounding. The view of the river below is nicely incorporated in the composition and the colours are very good.

If not for the green grass this could be in the Southwest U.S. Beautiful place for a church, I just hope the worshipers are not distracted by the beautiful scene. Good pov and sharp details. Very well done, tfs.

wonderful view and so nicely presented! The church is amazing piece of architecture and the higher POV you chose for this photo gives great perspective on the building and the surroundings as well. The river in the distance adds to the landscape. Excellent DOF and sharpness and lovely colors.

Good evening Chris,
Combined view from a higher perspective over the curved river on its deep ravine, and the church on the slop.
No ghosts seen anywhere, yet a fine landscape and an archi.-detail that is in great view on.
Didi (56249) 2014-04-03 15:48

Vue plongeante sur l'église et a la fois étendue sur le paysage, tout bon POV
J'aime sa forme et ces couleurs particulière de l'église dans un bel environnement vert, belle lumière et présentation
ourania (30063) 2014-04-05 6:31
this is a captivating picture, superbly composed from an elevated vantage point in a deep vertical frame. The building is extremely interesting (it's touching to see the frescoes still discernible after so many centuries and suffering). I like very much the sharp description of the abandoned building and the smooth and pleasing way we are led to travel all over the landscape. The colours are vivid and delightful and I also like the discreet interest and quiet rhythm offered by the people. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
annjackman (19189) 2014-04-05 23:16
This is a fascinating old church and I read your note with interest. What a shame about the vandalism. Your high viewpoint is excellent and I enjoy seeing the church set in the wider landscape beyond. Beautifully photographed.
Kind Regards, Ann

A beautiful photo telling a sad story of neglect and vandalism. Target practice? The place should be declared a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Angshu (55373) 2014-04-09 1:51
Lovely picture, this. The conical roof seems to have collapsed. The BG of the river in its bend offers a lovely backdrop.
You mention this as 'church with frescoes'...are there any frescoes remaining inside the church. If yes, would it be possible to share pictures of some of the frescoes.
This is a lovely picture, and one in the truest spirit of TE
adores (36113) 2014-04-28 15:41
This really looks like the Armenian churches and like most part of them, it must offer a wonderful view! Beautiful, the church, the pov, the colours and even those persons coming out from the church. Good shot!
Miguel82 (22799) 2014-07-16 20:00
Wonderful landscape on Turkish/Armenian border Chris, a canyon with a river in the bg, high quality of picture, bright hues and light, original architectural style of church, regards
