Tiwanaku is an ancient pre-hispanic city situated on the altiplano between La Paz and the Titikaka lake. Capital of one of the first empires in the Andes, the first truly massive monumental structures of the Titicaca Basin were constructed here between AD 100 and 300. By 500 the center was functioning as the capital of an expanding empire that remained until about 1000 AD.
However, some theories do not agree with this version and believe the city could be much older, basing this on the presence of docks, which could have been situated on the shores of the in ancient times much wider lake Titikaka.

On this photo you can see one of two large anthropomorphic figures still standing on the Kalasasaya mound. This one faces the entrance and is placed on the central axis. The andesite stone used at the ruins was transported from 100 kilometers distance. The sandstone was quarried about 15 kilometers from the site.
