We often see the winter landscape in the mountains with a lot of sun, blue sky and the white snow. Here I show something very different - the small island on the frozen Baltic sea. Quite different view but for me also unusual and beautiful. I made a short trip by ferry to Soumenlinna near Helsinki - big fortress, UNESCO Heritage Site.

The day was rather grey and the scene wintry in the extreme. I like the composition with the church tower placed off to the left. Also, the crazy paving effect in the ice. Definitely not the time and the place for a swim!
I am planning a trip to Australia with 14 days in the country. I am flying into Sydney and wonder as a fellow photographer how long you would recommend staying there before moving on elsewhere?

as you say this is quite different to the sunny snow scenes we normally see. In this the cold is throughout the scene, even the sky looks icy! I love the child though so this would be a great place for me to visit especially if there is a fortress to photograph too! Lovely chilly scene
all the best

breathtaking shot welldone and wellseen
the weather was very bad this year
and the snow covered the greatest part
of Europe and Usa
you were very lucky to see this different
view also unusual and beautiful
the choice of sepia is the best

Indeed, this is a photo shot in color, but monochromatic in every other respect. It's effective to focus on the crackling, fractured sheets of ice in the foreground, as you have done. I've heard that the internet is especially good in the Baltic, but especially so in Finland.
Warm regards (not to play on words).

Podoba mi sie monochromatyczna paleta kolorow w tym zdjeciu, ktora swietnie oddaje nastroj skandynawskiej zimy. Ciekawy graficznie pierwszy plan.

You've done a great job capturing the coastal ice that forms and then breaks up repeatedly. The background of buildings and trees forms a lovely composition. A fine photo!

This is a classic case for not trusting your camera's meter. It is calibrated to assume that any scene you point it at is 18% grey. Most scenes are, more or less. But snow scenes definitely are not. Similarly if you try to shoot a black cat in a coal-hole, that won't be 18% grey either, though it will be the other end of the light spectrum. Your meter will over-compensate in both cases: making snow scenes darker and dark scenes lighter. The meter is saying to itself, when pointed at a snow scene, "Wow, loads of light here, I'd better stop down!" So your bright snow or ice ends up a muddy grey. I think that's what's happened here. I realise that the day was overcast and gloomy, and maybe evening was drawing in. But my point stands. You need more contrast, and in particular, more highlight definition. Pretty cool location by the way!

Ty znowu w drodze...
Ale mnie sie podoba ta tonacja kolorow, jest niepowtarzalna.
Nawet niebo tutaj pasuje do reszty.

It is a fun trip through an icy passage, and this is a well chosen photo spot showing those old buildings. Crumbling is looks good, smaller blocks near the passage and bigger ones further away. I agree with Will, it could be brighter. Looking at exposure values it wasn't that gloomy though it was cloudy. I wish you had better weather on your visit!

faktycznie inne niz wiekszosc zimowych zdjec.

Coming from a Nordic country this not an unusal view. Nevertheless, I really enjoy it. It shows that you could take exciting photos also on a very dark and grey day. The ice floes seen a Little bit from above is a great lead in to the Island and its building in the background. I could agree that the photo perhaps is a little dark, but on the other hand side it very well conveys the mood on dark day in the Nordic countries. It could actually be very dark all day in winter. TFS and have a nice evening!

Nice ocean area. Very nice lightness on the broken ice. Beautiful perspective.

My this place does look bleak and cold yet as you say as you look closer it has it own uniqueness and beauty.
Great low Pov, skimming this frozen lake, super sombre mood. Well managed.
Nice to see you back after your holl's.

Hi and greetings from Finland. You have captured well a typical winter day in Finland. Sky might be blue but there also might be weeks only with grey foggy weather like this winter, so this is so typical. I´m happy you shared this as the opposite of great sunny photos from southern countries. The quiet atmosphere is nice, and Suomenlinna looks fascinating.

I always wished to see the baltic sea like this and walk on ice through the harbour of Helsinki, but when I look at your picture, I´m glad that I sit at home near the central heating. I could not resist to play around with your photo and adjust it a little more to my imagined winter in Helsinki. Hope you like the workshop, even if it is perhaps far from the situatuion you saw in reality.
Sorry, I did not realize that Will Perrett already offered a workshop, I agree with him, he is completely right!
