This is the Stupa in the capital of Sri Lanka, I took this photo near the main port of Colombo. And this construction reminds me a crane of port too.
Stupa is a mound-like or semi-hemispherical structure containing Buddhist relics, typically the ashes of Buddhist monks, used by Buddhists as a place of meditation.
Stupas originated as pre-Buddhist earthen burial mounds, in which ascetics were buried in a seated position, called chaitya. After the parinirvana of the Buddha, his remains were cremated and the ashes divided and buried under eight mounds with two further mounds encasing the urn and the embers. Little is known about these early stupas, particularly since it has not been possible to identify the original ten monuments. However, some later stupas, such as at Sarnath and Sanchi, seem to be embellishments of earlier mounds.
The stupa was elaborated as Buddhism spread to other Asian countries becoming, for example, the chorten of Tibet and the pagoda in East Asia. The pagoda has varied forms that also include bell-shaped and pyramidal styles. In the Western context, there is no clear distinction between the stupa and the pagoda. In general, however, stupa is used for a Buddhist structure of India or south-east Asia, while pagoda refers to a building in East Asia which can be entered and which may be secular in purpose.
Stupas were built in Sri Lanka soon after King Devanampiyatissa converted to Buddhism, the first stupa to be built was the Thuparamaya. Later on Sri Lanka went on to build many stupas over the years, some like the Jetavanarama in Anuradhapura being one of the tallest ancient structures in the world.

A great capture of this stupa that a distinctive modern feel to it. I like the point of view and the use of the stupa as a frame for the background cranes. The image benefits from a pleasant warm light and colours.

what is that? a Spaceship?
It looks as if they were in the middle of constructing this building, then stopped!
what a strange looking piece of architecture!!!
Never seen anything like it before in my life.
maybe its just me, but I wonder why we havn't seen more of it on TE.
Great to see the candy-cane colored cranes in the bg too!

Interesting notes accompany your photograph.
I'm not sure what I expected from Sri Lanka but this surprised me. It really is a most stunning building and very well composed and exposed in your photograph. You have revealed the smooth textures and the shapes sharply.
I do find the imposing signature detracts a little from the beauty of the shot. Sorry!
Have a great Sunday,

Très impressionnante l'architecture de ce bâtiment qui trône dans un ciel très gris. Impressionnantes aussi toutes ces grues rouge et blanc en arrière plan.

This is a really interesting modern take on such an ancient tradition of building, I like this a lot. The view you chose allows us to see the cranes behind as well creating an interesting contrast of colors and moods. Great place to see and learn about, and a great note too.
Thanks as always

what an unusual building! I read your note with interest to learn more. I wonder if you managed to get there inside or just saw it from outside.
The colors are vibrant and pretty thanks to very well handled light. Superb sharpness and well planned composition.
Thanks for sharing and have a nice Sunday!

Hello Serghie - This is a style of stupa I have never seen before. I can see the obvious traditional architectural style but the legs it stands on are, as far as I know, unique. A fascinating shot, nicely sharp and well managed but I have to agree with Bev; your signature is a little too 'heavy' and pulls my eyes away from the main event! Warm regards Rosemary

This building has a very big value for Buddhist people.
You chose a very well angle, we see the cranes in background with red/white paint as cranes for the port.
Sharpness and colours make these picture attractive.
A nice composition, excellent captured.
Nice done, TFS.
Have a nice week,

The view up is clever. The composition is well chosen, with excellent combination of light and shadows and great depth. I like the blue color of the sky because it contrasts nicely with the whites, beige and reds in the photo. Bravo. Have a nice weekend.

Ciao e buona giornata
