Let me introduce you to Elizabeth, she is one very hardworking and resourceful lady that we met in Kenya. A single mum who is fiercely determined to give her child the best education that she can, she set up this small roadside shop where she sells basic items to passing trade. The ‘shack’ was built out of bits and pieces others had thrown away and little by little Elizabeth has built up her selection of goods and trade. In addition to the shop, Elizabeth has started a ‘tailoring’ business and sews clothing on an old foot pedal Singer machine.
Elizabeth’s little boy has a mum in a million.

Cette maman autoentrepreneuse souriante a tout pour gagner de quoi bien éduquer son enfant. Ta belle photo lui rend un bel hommage.

Hi Rosemary, Such a heartwarming story, the young woman is so brave and on your photo looks happy and proud after telling you about her difficult life. Splendid portrait of the mum in a million.
I remember in Poland when our system changed, what were the beginning of a free trade. First the people sold good just on a street, later were the beds, later shacks,.. and now people have real shops. But often finally come big foreign markets..
Warm regrads MAlgo

Bonjour, chère Rosemary,
Le sourire de cette jeune femme fait plaisir à voir dans son petit commerce qui s'apparente à une grande surface (on y trouve de tout).
L'image est bien mise en valeur et les couleurs chantent joliment.

this is a photographic counterpart of gert's egg seller from yemen, while this one is much much younger :) she looks quite happy for being there and becoming your heroine. the colors are so nice and natural, the big format makes me feel there.

A delightfull note to enhance this lovely portrait, well lighted (the eggs seem to work as a reflector) and full of optimism and joy. Come on Elizabeth!

This is a beautiful picture and there is so much to like in this. First of all, the smile on the woman’s face, and the obvious sense of pride at what she has built here comes across so strongly, its actually inspiring. And that is the same word I would use when I read your note too, the achievements people can make when they have so little to begin with should put so many to shame. As I think of people (me included on occasion I am ashamed to admit) who feel that they cannot do something because they’ve been dealt a bad hand, it really makes me wonder about how differently people view things depending on how much they have. The more we have, the more it seems we think we need to succeed.
The framing of the woman in her store surrounded by her goods here is brilliantly done, and a wonderful idea to give space in the foreground too the many items on sale here. An inspirational shot, and one in which I think I can once again see your photography and personal skills, Elizabeth looks so comfortable here.
Hahaha, I’m using her name like I know her. Thanks to your capture here, I know her a little anyway.
Thanks as always

What a beautiful portrait of a very special lady. I wish her and her son all the best in life. She looks pretty determined to make it too. What I love about this is that she shyly looks away from the camera, but quite clearly has a good rapport with you and is quietly flattered that you want to photograph her. The colours are lovely and vibrant and I also love that she is surrounded by the goods of her trade, which create a natural frame for her. Pretty lady too. Thanks for sharing, have a wonderful weekend.
Hugs and mamma says a big hello and thanks

Your notes perfectly support your photograph!
For part of my teaching career, I taught Adult Literacy and have a great empathy for adults who succeed despite the obstacles that they have to overcome. This lady certainly is a mum to appreciate.
Your photograph has conveyed her character, her zest for life! She almost sparkles with enthusiasm in her little shop.
You have positioned her nicely off-centre so that she is able to look into the space.
Have a great w/e,
Toe membranes would be a definite advantage at the moment. Rain is tumbling, streams are at capacity, the hills are hiddden in a grey mist and I haven't taken any photographs for ages!!!

Ciao e buon fine settimana

A wonderful story and well done to her for being so enterprising. The portrait is very well done and great to see some of the goods that she sells. I am guessing that the light conditions were difficult so you did very well indeed.
Kind Regards, Ann

I am pleased and flattered that my latest picture inspired you to dig this out of your archive. It's a very nice photo and the saleswoman seems to be surrounded by just as many items as her colleague in Yemen. She has a lovely smile and is perfectly dressed for a colour photo. Your interesting note gives the photo another dimension by telling us a lot more than a quick glance would ever reveal. I have met, or been in touch with, a lot of extremely impressive African women working hard to make ends meet and provide for their kids. Africa really needs a lot more women in decision-making poitions.

A wonderful portrait of this corageous woman, wonderfully framed by countless objects, each of which tell a little story of everyday life.
It is really a symphony of colors and shapes. Also, the woman being slightly on a side and looking in the opposite directions perfectly adds dynamism to the whole composition.
InasiaJones (31446) 2014-02-04 17:45
I like the portrait of this woman in her working environment, with a documentary approach that illustrates your note perfectly.
With her radiant face and casual expression, you've captured her natural attitude. I also like the way she is framed by her products.
A positive presentation of Africa. Well done Rosemary!

A real African store:)! So many things around to sell and a seller with a mobile:)! It's curious, but even in the villages of Senegal I've seen people with mobiles. A very good daily scene, with much colour and a nice smile!
