I don't know anything about this shepherd's professional or human qualities, but he didn't object to my camera and that was good enough for me.
I met him while taking a stroll in the Wadi Dhahr area some distance from Sanaa, capital of Yemen. I went there mainly to see the former kings' summer palace, but I also reached this interesting village.
If you wish you can have a look at the summer palace from another angle, and yet another view of Wadi Dhahr as workshops.
All these photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides. Here is a larger version of the shepherd.

Very good documentation of the daily life of people, I wish I could travel to those parts of the world but your photos will do for now. Good lighting and nice details. Well done, tfs.

Another wonderful composition from the archives! The colour, composition, clarity everything excellent. The bigger version has such nice details. The slightly curious expression on the shepherd's face is charming. Thanks for sharing.

This here can be an illustration to the Bible, parable of the good shepherd. Excellent photo with a characteristic scene, very well done

Hi Gert, another great memory of your beautiful trip in Yemen, this old sheperd in pose like a movie star is truly great! An excellent composition too with a lot of sheep in background and very good colors and details.Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Oh man, you have to love that Coca-Cola truck in the other photo! how sweet is that!
this photo is about 25 years old, not too too long ago, but still very interesting. So whats the age expectancy for sheep? 25 years? i doubt it...so perhaps all of these sheep are passed away now haha...poor sheep!
interesting attire, interesting choice of footwear too.
it all makes for a memorable photo opp, glad you took advantage of it. The Palace looks great too.
see you around

Your scanned shots remind me of the pictures in National Geographic magazine of the early seventies. A good composition and a nice portrait of this shepherd at work. The sheep look rather skinny, but I guess they had been shorn a short while ago. A powerful portrait of rural life and a very nice documentary shot.

the classical pose of the shepherd complete with a crook sets the scene very nicely, his well weathered face tells it`s own story.
That is most impressive stone wall in the BG.
A delightful travel documentary.
Best wishes Les.

how interesting: the momentary meeting of two complete strangers coming from totally different cultures and living in very different surroundings, many thousands of miles away, gave a wonderful daily life photo observed by viewers many miles and years apart:) I like very much the naturalness of this scene and how it is combined with the strong and captivating gaze of the shepherd towards you. I'm sure you shared the same respect and curiosity for each other. Colours and textures make a very strong impact and tell us about the hot climate. The density of the shadows is amazing. I like very much the workshop pictures too and find them very interesting. Such a mysterious place under a merciless sunlight. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

I found the rock palace of Wadi Dhar so beautiful and you present here an excellent picture in the workshop. That's a photo that many here would post as main picture. Although I have already long understood that your interest to take pictures of the daily life is much greater.
In Yemen I also took a lot of pictures of the people ... but that's something in which I'm definitely not as good.
Seeing the jambiya of that man here reminds me of the fact that I bought one as a souvenir. One time I decided to wear it, just for fun. The reactions of the Yemenis were particularly funny :)
Best regards, Paul

Hello dear Gert,
Nice capture of this Yemeni shepherd.
Again a perfect scan with those beautiful "nonartifical" colors of the analogue photography.
TFS and best regards

A fantastic snapshot of daily life in Yemen 15 years ago. The traditional attire of the shepherd and his posing for your photo are attractive elements. I like the dry, rugged terrain captured so typical of Mid-east region. I like your old photos a lot and appreciate your effort to present them on TE. Thanks for sharing.
SnapRJW (27158) 2014-01-17 4:46
I'm guessing it was cool in Yemen when you took this shot Gert as the shepherd is dressed quite warmly and with a decent pair of boots on his feet. Again, I notice the decorative, traditional knife at his waist and, most importantly his keys! Another fine trio of shots which opens our eyes to a land seldom seen on TE. Warm regards Rosemary
PS The palace is an amazing building.... so decorative.

Hello Gert. Yemen is so interesting because it is so backward. We also see today living conditions that seem to belong to the past. The shepherd with his sheep in rocky environment - everything seems archaic here. Overall, a great documentary shot.
Best rgds, Wolfgang.

another daily life scene and again another nice catch. I like your high POV, which created a nice atmosphere. Good depth and sharpness with fine colour tone. Superb composition. Tfs.
abmdsudi (36444) 2014-01-17 23:14
Excellent story telling composition really fantastic personal moment showing the pleasant good man and the flocks of sheep probably away from home while keeping the animals safe from predators. Despite the hard life, he was clearly proud of them and the smile adds lots of life and vigour to colour the day. An excellent photo journalism and pp works nicely, Congrats

I like both photos, another amazing report from Yemen. The summer palace looks very attractive for a special research. As always the scanned photo quality is perfect.

Kamilutka (6771) 2014-01-18 20:42
what a shame we do not know more about this shepherd - it would be nice to know that the title has been chosen so accurately :-) Nevertheless he made interesting object together with his sheep. I like how although he is looking towards the camera he seem still absorbed in his walking as if stopping to pose would be such a waste of time.
Well composed with nice warm light and very natural rich colors.
Thanks for sharing
kato (11140) 2014-01-18 21:23
You're capturing well this daily life by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interestring and impressive to see the many goats eating the grass and its elderly shepherd wearing the traditional clothes and having a long stick by hand. It's also impressive in stone wall in back. And, It looks like a great architecture for former king's summer palace of Islamic design on huge rock in WS.
papagolf21 (81722) 2014-01-19 11:24
Bonjour, cher Gert,
Waylim (24562) 2014-01-21 11:29
Continuing the journey through small town. A good shot of the sherperd with his goats. The light is strong and seem to be very hot with the brown vegetation. The picture really show the harsh environment.

Lovely image of this old sheperd. As they say,Old is gold,it appears to be true.

Hi Gert, With your title it looks like an illustration from the Bible for children. I like this stick. Beautiful shot.
I am not sure if it was a super idea to go to northern countries in winter. I see in Google in Helsinki is now minus 14. Brrrr
nikkitta (11212) 2014-01-25 16:31
Just saw the summer palace impresive (next time) now I want to comment this good capture of the so kind sheeper with the sheeps in this very rural ambience, stone wall included
What call more more my atention are the heavy shoes he is wearing , not the apropiated ones, ( my oxidental idea)
Congrats and keep posting your captures from Yemen

A very good shot and a timeless photo! He seems to be amused with your camera:)!I like his pose looking at you while the sheep eat, in background. A great daily scene!
