Afew years ago I saw the movie title Baraka. It is a documentary film with no narrative or voice-over. It explores themes via a kaleidoscopic compilation of natural events, life, human activities and technological phenomena shot in 24 countries on six continents over a 14-month period. In the beginning of the film, and in trailer, I saw amazing scenes with monkeys bathing in a hot spring with snow around. I was so fascinated that I made a small research and found they live in Japan, near Nagano. I must go and see them - I thought. And I did. from Warsaw to Jigokudani is a far and expensive trip but it was my dream. crazy, but I visited many other places in Japan as well, but these cute monkeys were highlight of the trip. Takero showed recently a whole series from there, many people liked the shots, so it reminded me my excursion there. Strange that after such an effort to go to Jigokudani I posted only one photo. So this time I am inspired by wonderful Takero's photos, but earlier I told him about this place.
A sequel to Baraka, Samsara, made by the same filmmakers, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2011 and released internationally in August 2012. I began with photos from Bagan and Sossusvlei in Namibia, but this time I had seen it already :).
The snow monkeys are wild animals. I saw them not only in the warm spring but also in the forest. But they have no fear of the people and you can be very close, almost you can touch them (I didn't try though).

Tu as vraiment beaucoup voyagé. Je ne me souvenais pas que tu avait été au Japon. Pays merveilleux qui fait partie de mes rêves à réaliser. On te sent très près du singe. On sent l'intérêt dans son regard. Il est superbe.

amazing shot this, with delicate and fascinating detail. A sad looking little red face but compelling, and all the more so after reading your notes. A special image this one.

Piekna małpa. Taka "ludzka", portret doskonały, ze zwierzętami nigdy nie wiadomo czy i jak zapolują i dadzą sie sfotografować.

First I thought its Takero's monkeys. I was like what happen to the ice, where is the baby? Then I saw your name :) A very meaningful look from the handsome guy, I think he is congratulating you for your determination. Of course how he could know your itchy feet :))

haha...yes, this is Tosca's dream too!
The only problem is that these monkeys only go to the hot baths in November! So when we travel to other parts of Japan it will be cold! I'd prefer to see Japan in the spring or summer months...Oh well, you can't have it all in life i suppose.
looks like this fella has a bit of a sun burn haha.
but his expression is awesome, and I like how he's looking a bit crouched down.
nice shot! I hope to see more of these in your gallery

che bella sorpresa, pensavo fosse una foto dell'amico Takero, mentre invece è tua.
Ho visto e apprazzato anch'io le foto postate da Takero, sono molto belle e curiose, come queste, di ottima qualità.

Beautiful monkey portrait. Smart tight crop (close-up) choice to accentuate the cat with splendid sharpness, nice colors, excellent light and very good POV choice. Nice eyes. Excellent result.

I too enjoed Takero's shots of these little creatures, and having seen those and now this, I think someday I too may make a Trekearth inspired trip to Japan to see them in person! They are such wonderful animals, and have such emotive faces. Takero, just as you showed so much resemblance to humans and our own emotions. The colors are fantastic in this.
I love your workshop too, especially the one showing him in context of the hot steaming spring.
Thanks as always

Hi dear Malgo, how are you?
Ya this is very good subject but recently so many tourists disturb shooting. And in 2010 you had better visit there 1.5 month later. If so, you can see monkey with snow. While judging from the weather forecast, I try to go and shot this winter. I want to take shot them with thick snow on thier heads---.
All the best and have a good day! TAKERO

Very cute shot of the snow monkey. Where is the snow on the head that we seen so much in the Discovery Channel? :) Love the red face like like it is shy or embarassed. Excellent portrait of the monkey. It is so much like one of us.
