Photographer's Note

Plaza Independencia is probably the most photogenic square in Montevideo. Most people prefer to show it with Palacio Salvo, which is one the most iconic buildings in the Uruguayan capital. I have showed that view before (click here to see it) so here for a change photo taken into a less popular direction but with the same monument. It is a monument of J.G. Artigas. I was not sure which version to pick so in the workshops I include both a wider view as well as a close up of the monument.

José Gervasio Artigas Arnal (1764 – 1850) is a national hero of Uruguay, sometimes called "the father of Uruguayan nationhood". His portrait is on the watermark on the 1998 Uruguay 5 Pesos Uruguayos banknote.
