In my previous posting, taken from pretty much the same point in the village of Corniglia, I showed the approaching storm, and said that in the other direction was sunshine and blue sky. Well this is it. We spent quite a time looking in this direction, pretending the storm over the mountains wasn't there!
Manarola is one of the Cinque Terre villages, spectacularly perched on a cliff over the sea. The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. "The Five Lands" is composed of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Manarola's primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The local wine, called Sciacchetrà, is especially renowned; references from Roman writings mention the high quality of the wine produced in the region. In recent years, Manarola and its neighboring towns have become popular tourist destinations, particularly in the summer months. Tourist attractions in the region include a famous walking trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore (called Via dell'Amore, "Love's Trail") and hiking trails in the hills and vineyards above the town.

Hello Will ,
You've got very special weather conditions , visiting the Cinque Terre . But so great for the photographer . This is here a superb capture of the famous village with this splendid light and the puffy stormy clouds in the BG .

I love the way that the afternoon light picks out the facets of the buildings and accentuates the clustered form of the village sitting on the headland. Well-captured with those clouds in the background.

Ah, such beauty, and so well caught. Lovely framing and the light is the best there is.

Nice view of this old village which is located in a fantastic place. It is clinging on to the cliff. Good inclusion of the liner on the sea to give the viewer something to see in the blank space. Magical light on the village which you have captured very well. A very good photo.

Do you know that I was in Manarola 2 weeks before you were? I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. What an amazing part of the world. The calm before the storm here has been beautifully taken. I love the threatening sky, and how it has illuminated the colours of the village on the cliff. The ship on the horizon also gives us a sense of scale and balances the composition. This is not the usual POV we see of Manarola, nor the usual light. So it's great to see something different come from this over-photographed place. Well done! One nit-pick - unless I've consumed too many pre Christmas drinkipoos, the horizon is wonky and there's a dust spot at the top of the frame :)

Hello Will - We will be in Italy next May and I have booked a few days in Cinque Terre so this shot is of special interest to me. I like your vantage point here; it shows, quite dramatically, the relationship between the village and the sea and one can only marvel at the skills of the builders and road construction crew who managed to forge such an attractive place in such a challenging landscape. The village looks especially attractive set against the rising storm clouds. Nice one! warm regards Rosemary

There is no more amazing light like before storm! The setting of this small town in cinque terre is incredible. it seems to me that I see the road down there cut in the rock. and the clouds, they are fabulous.

Wonderful how this village is hanging on the edge of the cliff.
Very remarkable is that path below it that runs completely around the cliffs.
The light on the houses and on the clouds is very beautiful.
Best regards, Paul

your idea to present us Manarola from the distance appeals to me much. We´ve seen many pictures of this picturesque town taken practically from the same POV,so this is really refreshing change to see it from this perspective.Even more because of these amazing looking cloud formations.Your title leaves no doubt-although the clouds lit up by so soft and warm light look very pleasant.
Magnificent and very atmospheric composition!
Have a nice sunday

fascinating the view as the presentation of this charmy place with the village to be found on the edge of the rock. The excellent light as falling on the houses brings out the beauty and the details of them.
I wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year,Danos

this is a spectacular location. The houses are so nicely crowded on the rock. You have captured the village in a nice light which results in a 3D effect.
The clouds behind add a nice touch as well. It feels romantic and it is hard to believe that from behind some dark clouds approach.
I always enjoy when people make WS of my photos -it means for me that they like them enough so that they want to spend some time improving them. :)
