Just outside Stari Grad (Old Town) of Budva, and on the coastal path to Mogren Beach we found this lovely sculpture. It is work of the sculptor Gradimir Aleksić, who found his inspiration in a old local legend about a girl, who came each morning to the beach, spent her days looking at the open sea, waiting for her fiancé to come back to her. The years passed by, sailors came and went, but her fiancé never returned. One day, she was found dead on that rock, her look was aimed to the open sea.
I was busy taking a few photographs when a group of young people arrived. From their English conversation, I concluded that they were dancers from a cruise ship. As you can see, one of them decided to see what she could do. They didn't mind my snapping away: entertainers are basically exhibitionist after all.
I've added a WorkShop to show the Ballerina on her own. Not the girl: the sculpture!

What an unexpected opportunity!
You have created your own, very special, sculpture, in this shot!
The fine dof pinpoints the sculptures but creates a wonderful context at the same time.
Have a great day,

Hi Will. Talk about luck!Great reaction on your part and despite the unexpected, everything is shipshape- exposure, light, definition and composition. Wonderful moment of abandon and joie de vivre. Regards. Klaudio.

Humour element of this photo is bound to bring a smile as soon as you see it.
Excellent composition, timing and opportunism against the backdrop of this beautiful sea, low clouds and the cliffs. The dancer has matched the statue perfectly except for the leg, she has not balanced on her toes as the statue has done.
I predict this photo will score high. Great work sir and thanks for sharing.
CLODO (35736) 2013-12-05 2:29
super parallel, you were lucky to meet this dancer at this moment, great "street" shot!
kordinator (22519) 2013-12-05 2:39
I like this artistic scene.
Nice and rich details.
Excellent composition and presentation.

This is a beautiful sculpture and such an unusual place in which to find it, but your note of course explains that reasoning. I really like the timing of your shot to coincide with these flexible visitors, she has done an admirable job to copy this stance.
Great workshop too, but strangely I can only see that on thumbnail, when I click on the thumb, it only shows the lower left portion of your shot.
Great picture and moment, thanks for sharing
All the best

hello william. you had a nice tour: dubrovnik, kotor, budva... like many of our shared destinations, i did the same and it was fantastic. unfortunately i had to stick to the tour (a big mistake) and was limited to the old towns, missing such spontaneous opportunities. great and humorous similarity between the statue and the dancer. there is a slight difference between them (one is dressed), but it is ok :)
Didi (60590) 2013-12-05 4:29
Very nice scene, very good artistic composition
But the young lady has an indentic position but the statue is nude :)

mkamionka (39937) 2013-12-05 5:19
beautiful photo. It is a great combination of wonderful scenery, some modern art and a good looking girl. Plus we have a repeated motif in the foreground contributing to pleasant geometry. I like also the clouds partially covering the hills behind adding a bit mysterious touch.
Very well seen and captured!!

Hello Will, I really like your composition on this photo. The statue and the lady are in a perfect sync.
Congrats and greetings.

Hello Will ,
What a great oportunity you've got there ! The position of the woman is just perfect .
chrislo (4097) 2013-12-05 10:06
The resemblance is almost perfect, and you were damned lucky to meet these dancers and attend a live performance. The scene is perfectly composed and framed, the sea and the mountains make a nice backdrop to the pretty silhouettes whose flexible shapes provide rythm and dynamism to the photo. Very well done.

Good observed and captured ! Not a bad competition.

Great photos come out of serendipity. A perfect snapshot in time. What luck.
I love the workshop that shows the statue from a slightly different perspective but provides a wonderful backdrop.

It's just great opportunity to see this talented young dancer repeating the posture of the sculpture. Beautiful weather and mountain background are beneficial to the result too. I like the way you have left more space towards right.
macjake (72535) 2013-12-15 12:31
funny story indeed.
perhaps it was great timing :)
If the girl was on her toes she may be able to reach the same height as the sculpture, but her head is already at the same height.
great background to this photo too, everything seems to work quite well. excellent exposure levels.

This is a very cool shot. my kudos to the real person, she can actually really mimic the statue very closely and she is very flexible. she must either is a gymnist, balet dancer, and or practice yoga. Anyway. Love how they are almost the same size and height. Okay, so just continue reading your note to realize she is a dancer :)
Excellent shot, and how lucky they arrived while you were still here.
Love the WS too with just the statue and the beautiful background with the church tower in a very good composition.
KristinsCamera (2384) 2013-12-17 18:44
wow, what a great shot!
lovely symmetry and great fun, with a stunning backdrop.
i thought perhaps she was a yogi, as that is a pose that we aim for, tho many cannot get to that degree of flexibility. if i could get that far, i'd pose in public, too :)
krzychu30 (15512) 2013-12-18 1:47
that´s what I call to be at the right place at the right time.
Superb photo opportunity excellently utilized by You!

From the thumbnail version of this shot I could not quite make out the image. But now I see how well you've conceived and composed this photo. And again, it is is from Montenegro, which I discovered just last year.
Happy Holidays and a very good 2014 to you,
subhendu_bagchi (26089) 2014-01-05 4:00

Excellente prise de cette femme d'une souplesse très large et reproduisant les mouvements de la statue, cela ne t'a pas échappé et ta réalisation est excellente

I love this one, Will! As you may know, I have spent some time photographing the statues in La Paz, Mexico, but it had never occurred to me to have a person mimic the sculpture -- this is brilliant!
