Photographer's Note

Eastern Montana is a transition zone where the prairie breaks into pine covered hills and ultimately the Rockie mountains rise from the hills. Much of this part of the state are dryer do to the rain shadow cast by the mountains in the west. This is a land of the cattle ranchers. Some dry land farming occurs in those areas with sufficient rain. Most of these areas receive less than 30 cm of rain. The climate is harsh with winter temps to minus 40 and summer temps to plus 45. The temperatures can vary widely in one day going from minus 40 to plus 20. These temperature changes are the most variable in the world.
