This is a second photograph, of a stucco panel on the north basement wall of the palace to the west of the stairway. I have been unable to obtain any authoritative description of exactly what is represented. Similar images appear on paired censers that stood either side of the central entrance to temples, and now may be seen only in museums. This may be, I must be very careful, may be a representation of the Jaguar God of the Underworld.
For the Maya, the underworld was divided into nine levels governed by the bolontiku. The sun passes through the underworld on its daily journey through the universe. The nine levels of the underworld are reflected by the nine levels of the Temple of Inscriptions at Palenque, and again in the Temple of Kulkulkan at Chichen Itza.
